FOLDING COT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jos-nrii LUPrINo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New. York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots, of :which the following is a specification.
' .This invention relates to folding cot-beds and particularly to cot-bed of this type which may be readily and easily folded into atcompact structure so as to occupy a minimunrof space and to .facilitate the portage andtransportation of the same, and which use, easily manipulated, and comfortable to 'ing the ei nlsections inwardly to a position above and parallel to the main sectiomthe main section having a length at least as great as the combined length of the two end or: outersections, the latterin folded position-being located in non-overlapping relation thereby providing an inoreasedlengthwise housing space and at the same time a compact structure.
- Other objects of the invention will appear during the course of the ensuing description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of thespecification wherein like reference characters indicate similar parts'throughout the several views and wherein Fig.1 is a perspective view of my. improved cot-bed in an open or unfolded position; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof in its folded position; Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views indicating successive stepsin theoperation-of the parts and Fig. 5 is a detail view indicatingfthemanner of operation of the outer sections.

One end 14of each section 11 is pivoted or hinged to an outer or end section 12 and at its opposite end has connected thereto a pair of folding legs 15. In the present instance in order to provide space for the legs 15 between the sections 10 and 11, the latter preferably comprises a pair of members or side bars 30 and 31 suitably secured together. The member 31 has an offset-portion 32 and is pivotally connected to the leg 15 as .at 17. The folding legs 15 are preferably pivoted as at 1.5 to depending brackets'16 rigidly secured to the siderails of the main mattress section 10. Suitable lost motion slots 18 are provided in each leg 15-f0r the movement of the pivot 17 thereby ensuring the necessary flexibility during-the operation of the various parts. i
In order to provide suitable supporting i means for the outer or end folding sections 12 each section thereofis provided with. a pair of foldable legs 19 pivoted as at 19 to the side rails of section 12 and adapted, upon swinging said sections to their folded position above the main section '10, ,to loe moved to a position substantially parallel vith.the section 1.0. During this operation due to the fact that each intermediate section 11 is pivoted to the main section 10, this section upon being swung about the axis 13 will act as a leverto swing the legs 15 in an opposite direction .and to a position substantially parallel with the side tal and endwise alinement with each other thereby providing sufi icient housing space for the mattress without causing the ends of the latter to be overlapped one above the other. v Furthermore due to the fact that each leg 15 is pivoted adjacent to one end'thereof as at 15 to the bracket 16, and' due to the fact that the side rails of the section 11 are pivoted as at 17 to the legs 15, the sections 11 therefore when swung from a horizontal position to a vertical position as illustrated inFig s. 5, 4 and 3, due to the inter-connections will swing the legs 15 from a'verti cal position to a horizontal position, the one having a swinging movement in a direction I opposite to the swinging movement of the other. The legs 15 have each a fulcrum in termediate its length at 15 upon thernain section-10, and are operated by the interniediate section 11 by virtueof thedirect connection at oneend' 17 with the free ends of the intermediatebed section. Also it will be observed that the supporting legs 19 and 15 are automatically controlled and oper- 'atedthrou'gh'the medium of the sections 11 andiipon folding the bed from the position of Fig. 1 150 the position of Fig. 2 the supporting legs 19 and 15 will be swung from a vertical position to a horizontal position toward each other. Each of the supportlegsle are provided with suitable casters 27 whereby in its folded position the bed is adapted to rest thereupon and may be easily shifted or moved from 'placeto place. In the present instance the several sections of tliefra'rnework are all connected by a single "stuffed mattress support herein shown as a spring or spring mattress 40 which may be connected at its ends to the framework by suitable coiled springs 41.
When it is desiredto unfold my improved cotbed from the position illustrated in Fig. 2, it is merely necessary to grasp each outer section 12 and swingthe same through the successive positions illustrated in the Figs. 3 and 4-to the position shown in Fig. 5 wherein the section 12 is in an upright position at right angles to the section 11 which has assumed a horizontal position in the operation. From an inspection of Fig; 5 it will be observed that the foldablelegs 19 are not opened or moved during thisope'ration so that the operation is not hampered by the 'tion of the parts. served that the distance between the pivots swinging thereof, but that the legs 15 alone are swung to their supporting position and thus "support the weight of the bed, making itmuoh easier to manipulate the other parts,

Hence owing to the particular location of the several pivots betwe'enlthe legs 19, links 20, and bed section 12 the legs 19 are locked in position at this time and it is practically impossible to open orunfold the same by an attempt to do this by moving the bed section 12 until the legs have been grasped and swung outwardly (as illi1s-' trated in dotted lines in Fig.5) thereby swinging the pivots 19 and bed section 12 outwardly and downwardly which thus permits the section 12 to be readily swung to a horizontal position and the legs 19 swung to their supporting position.

at this time, the section 12 together with the legs 19 are immovable. Thereforeinorder to accomplish the unfolding of the legs 19 and sections 12, it is necessary to shift the pivots 19 with relation to the pivots 20 and 14 in order to permit the links2O tobe actuated and to unfold the legs.19. This is acoutvvardly a small distance as shown in complished merely by swinging thelegs 19 dotted lines in Fig. 5, and thereupon by grasping the ends of section 12, the same together with the legs" 19 -=can be readily swung-to the position in Fig; 1.

A cot bed comprising a relatively stationary main bed section'having at oneend an intermediate bed section and an end bed sectionpivotally connected together and to the main section, said end section being foldable relatively to the main bed section and forming therewith a housing space-for a mattress, and a pluralityof supporting legs automatically foldable during a predetermined movement of the bed sections and connected to both said main section and also said intermediate section;

A foldable bed structurecomprising a plurality of bed sections pivotally connected together and including an" inner and an intermediate section, said inner sectionbeing pivotally connected to the intermediate section intermediate its length, and automatically foldable legs for the inner section controlled by the free ends of said intermediate section.
5. A foldable cot-bed comprising a main section, a pair of end sections, and a pair of intermediate sections, one thereof connecting each end section with the main section and foldable to form a housing space for the mattress, and supporting legs for the several sections automatically foldable with the sections, certain ot said supporting legs being pivotally connected with the main section and certain thereof with the end sections, and certain thereof having connection of intermediate sections, one thereofconnecting each end section with the main section and foldable to form a housing space for the mattress, and supporting legs for the several sections automatically foldable with the sections, certain of said supporting legs beingpivotally connected to the main section, and certain thereoftothe end sections, said supporting legs beingvcontrolled by said intermediate sections.
.7. A .foldable cot bed comprising a main beds-section, an outer bed section and an intermediate bed section, said outer and intermediate sections being foldable relatively to the main bed section, and supporting legs for the bed automatically and reversely foldable with the folding sections.

A foldable cot-bed comprising a main section, an end section, and an intermediate section hingedly connected at one end to said end section and connected intermediate its length to the main section, a pair of foldable legs pivoted to the main section and to the opposite end of said intermediate section, a second pair of foldable legs pivoted to the end section and connected to the intermedisection above the main section to a folded position said intermediate section will'be eifect ive to swing said first legs in one direction to a position below the bed and said last legs in an opposite direction to a post tion above the bed.

A cot bed comprising a main bed section, and end bed section and an intermediatebed section connected together, said end and intermediate sections being foldable relatively to the main section to form a housing spacev for a mattress, and means for restricting the movement of the end section relatively to the intermediate section during a predetermined unfolding movement of the latter. a

A bed structure comprising a plurality of bed sections pivotally connected together, and a pair of automatically foldable legs therefor, said legs having each a fulcrum intermediate its length upon one of saidbed sections, and a direct operating connection at one end with another of saidrbed sections. a a 18.
