  • This invention relates to improvement in baskets and particularly to delivery baskets for grocers, butchers, etc., and especially to baskets for this'use which are non-nesting, that is, baskets which, when arranged in piles, one upon the other, the upper baskets will not enter the baskets next below them. To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ABRAHAM H. LAVIE- was, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelton, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application and represent, in-

This invention relates to improvement in baskets and particularly to delivery baskets for grocers, butchers, etc., and especially to baskets for this'use which are non-nesting, that is, baskets which, when arranged in piles, one upon the other, the upper baskets will not enter the baskets next below them. Baskets for this purpose are subjected to Very rough handling, and the object of the invention is to produce a basket which will withstand the strain commonly imposed upon them, and which are so reinforced that when one basket is piled upon another, the upper basket will not enter the lower basket, but will be firmly engaged with the upper edge thereof, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, 1 employ a basket 5 of the desired size and generally constructed in the usual-way, and including slats 6 at the bottom which are so much shorter than the length of the basket that they are adapted to enter the top of another basket. The wear upon these baskets 'is upon the upper corners and at the lower ends, and to provide for this wear I arrange a number of bearing-straps 7, herein represented as three in number, located between the slats and the bottom of the basket and extending upward at the ends, the side straps extending into the top frame 8, while the center strap is folded through the usual hand-openings 9 in the ends of the basket.
The top frame 8 is reinforced at the corners by angle-irons 10 having an outerflangell and inner flanges 12, which are secured to the top frame 8. These angleirons 10 not onlyreinforce the corners but provide metal bearings for the straps 7, as well as surfaces against which the ends of the slats 6 may abut.
To further strengthen the basket at its upper edge, I apply corner-straps 13 to the outer face of each corner, these straps preferably corresponding in width to the depth of the top frame to which the ends of the straps are rigidly secured. These straps also hold the upper ends of the straps 7.
I thus produce, in a very simple manner, baskets for the purpose mentioned which are adapted to withstand the wear commonly imposed upon baskets used for the said purposes.
I claim:
1. A basket including bottom slats shorter than the length of the basket, a top frame, straps arranged between the bottom slats and the bottom of the basket and extending specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 7
