Piling boxes with which I am familiar are usually made by deflecting the upper edge portion of the verticalwallofthebox to provide a shelf for the resting of the next box to. be piled upon it. When thev wall of a box is deflected in this manner weights from above when the attain a certain amount will collapse the walls of the box because of the increment of the loadwhich is: out. of line withthe plane of; thewa'll. Ihave found, however, that by causing the wall to. be upright and in a single plane and then by provideing-a shelf of a separate piece of stock'acrossthe edge of the wall, I do not'ne'ed'to' finish. the edge of the wall and the wall. will sustain a much greater weight. Further, by providing a strip of shelf. material around the edge of the. box in this manner I may make the box of much thinner stock and the support attained by a continuous strip' about the box or a stripwhich is welded at the corners. makes astronger box :andyet a box which. has no greater weight than heretofore; and the following is armore. detailed description of. the present embodiment of. this invention, illustrating the referred means by' which. these advantageous results may be accomplished:
With reference to the. drawings, l0 designates generall'y'a piling box'which is so constructed that a box: similar to it may be set: into the. rim. and upon the-shelf portionat the upper edge of the box. This box is formed of sheet metal and comprises a bottom ll, end'walls l2 and I3 and side walls I4" and I5. These walls are suitably securediby portions of one overlappingthe other as at l6 and I1 and being spot welded as at. 18. The upper edge of the wall such as l 9, seeFig- 2, neednot be finished and is toppedor capped by the shelf portion 20 of a strip of material which extends along the top edge of each of the walls.
Thisshelf portion 20 is provided with a rim 2| extending. upwardly therefrom: at substantially right angles to the shelf and is conveniently rolled outwardly as at 22v to provide a smooth edge 23. In some instances-however, the wall 21 may terminate in a finished edge 24' as shown in Fig. '7, while" in other instances the. wall 2| maybe rolled not only outwardly as at 22, see Fig. 8',v but also again inwardly as at 25- so as to provide a triplethickness of mm for greater strength. Alflange 26 extends" downwardly from the inner edge: of the shelf 20 at an angle of approximately 45 although the particular angle maybe varied, and thence downwardly as at 21 in face toface contact as at 28 with. the wall. It. and this flange is spot welded. as" at 29 to the wall l4 at various points along its length.
In positioning the strip of strengthening material upon the edge of the vertical walls of the box the stripshapedas shown in Fig. 4 is notched as at 30 through an angle of in the shelf and: flange portions" while the rim portion 2| remains uncut. The rim is then bent as at 31,. seeFig-B, so as to bring the edges 321 of thenotch 30 into contact as at 33 where they are welded as: at 34, see Fig. 5. These notchesare suitably placed and thebends occur at'suchpositions that. the strip of material will extend about the rest upon the upper edge of the vertical walls as 'by a rim 39.
point where it extends along the opening 4| of wall in face to face contact therewith and here secured together at intervals along said face-toface contact portions.
' 3..In a metal piling boxv 'having'upright walls each in a single plane, a shelf extending about 7 -said walls at substantially right angles thereto provide a very firm and rigid support at and about the upper edge of the box.
By reason of the fact that the walls such as l2, l3, M or l5 are in a singlevertical plane and a triangular structure is formed between the shelf and the wall by reason of the flange which is attached to the wall, the wall supports the strip;
and the strip supports the wall and much greater weights than heretofore permissible may 'be stacked upon the box and will be well sustained.
In some cases it is desirable to provide a hopper front for a box as illustrated in the showing as at 36 in Fig. 9. Here, one end wall is tilted outwardly as at 31 with its end portions 38 joining the corners of the verticalwalls and is supported In this instance the strip 40 at the the hopper front is rolled outwardly rather than as heretofore described, and along the wall to provide anarcuate portion 42, as shown in Figs.-
and 11, and this may occur wherever an opening is provided in'the box whether it be for a hopper front or for a handle opening, as will be readily apparent. However, a handle such as 43 may be suitably. attached to a bracket 44 secured to the end walls of the box.
The rim 2| is of such a dimension'across the box, as it extends up from the shelf, that the bottom of the box'will readily'be guided into a position on the shelf .22 and there maintained against sliding either longitudinally'or transversely of the box. a
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated-but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1: In a metal piling box having upright walls each in a single plane, a continuous shelf extending about said walls at substantially right angles thereto and resting directly upon the upper edges of the stock thereof and with the ends of said shelf in abutting relation and secured together, said shelf extending a substantial distance inwardly of the said walls, a rim extending upwardly from the outer edge of said shelf, and a flange extending downwardly and outwardly from the inner edge of saidshelf into contact with said upright wall and thence downwardly a substantial distance along said walls in face-to-face contact therewith, said shelf being secured to said box at intervals along the length of said face-toface contact portion of said shelf and walls.
2. In a metal piling box having upright walls, each in a single plane, a one-piececontinuous shelf extending about said walls at substantially right angles thereto and resting directly upon the upper edges of the stock of the walls and with the ends of the shelf in abutting relationship, said shelf extending a substantial distance inwardly and'outwardly'of the said walls, a rim extending downwardly from the inner edge of said shelf and at an angle thereto into contactwith said uprightwall, and thence downwardly along said and resting directly upon the upper edges of the stock of said walls and extending a substantial distance inwardly and outwardly thereof, a rim extending upwardlyfrom the outer edge of said shelf, a flange extending downwardly from the inner edge of said shelf and at an angle thereto into contact with? said upright wall, and thence downwardly along said wall in face to face contact therewith, and means for securing said flange and wall in said face to face contact 'at' intervals along its length. i
1 i. In a metal piling box of generally rectangu-- I lar shape, four. upright walls each in asingle plane, a reinforcing stripzof ,material extending along the upper edge of said box walls comprising a shelf at substantially right angles to and resting directly upon the upper edge of said'wall and extending asubstantial distance inwardly and outwardly thereof, a rim extending upwardly from the outer edge of said shelf,-'and a flange extending downwardly and outwardly from the inneredge of said shelf'and with a substantial part of the lower portion of said flange in face to face contact with said upright wall." I
5?. In ametal piling box of generally rectangular shape, four upright walls each in asingle plane, a singleintegral reinforcing strip of material extending along the upper edgeof said box I"; walls comprising a shelf at substantially right angles to and resting directly upon the upper edge of said wall and extending a substantial distance inwardly and outwardly thereof, a rim extending upwardly from the outer edge" of said shelf, 'aflangeaextending' downwardly and out-1 wardly from the inner edge of said shelf and with the lower portion of said flange in face to face contact with said upright wall, :and means to secure said flange to said wall.
6. In a metal piling box of generally rectangular shape, four upright walls each in a'single plane, a single integral reinforcing strip of material extending along the upper edge of said box walls comprising a shelf positioned at substantially right angles to said walls and resting directly upon the upper edges thereof and extend ing substantially equal distance on each 'side of said walls, a rim extending upwardly from the outer edge of said shelf, a flange extendingdo'wnwardly from the inner edge of said shelf and towards said upright wall and into contact there-' with, and means tosecure said flange to said wall,
said rim being continuous and said shelf and inner edge of said shelf into contact with three'of said upright walls, the other of said walls having a hopper front and the said flange along the extent of the hopperopening being rolled outwardly beneath said shelf.
