Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Application filed August 9, 1920. Serial No. 402,209.
TOCZZZLU/LWRitWtd-g/ concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sash Veights, of which I hereby declare the following to be full, clear, and exact descrip tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of the invention are to provide an improved sash weight, and a simple, economical and practical method of constructing the same from cement or other material.
In this device the weight is supported upon a hoisting pulley and includes reinforcing means for the body of the sash weight, which comprises also a journal in which the pulley is mounted.
The invention also includes a detachable cap member, by means of which the length and weight of the sash weight can be increased, and which also servesas a guide for the pulley cord, and is provided with engaging means which prevent the cap from shifting its position upon the sash weight, and
prevent it from Wearing the cord.
It includes reinforcing means for the cap and for the projecting members thereon that serve as retaining means for the cap.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective of the improved weight. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a plan thereof. Fig. t is a detachable cap therefor.
In these views, A represents the body of the sash weight. B is a metal strap, having a loop, C, intermediate of its ends. In the sides of the loop are formed journals, D, D, for the shaft, E, of a pulley F, around which the sash cord, G, is run.
The extremities of the strap, B, are inserted deeply within the body of the sash weight, and serve as a reinforcing means for the body, and at least one of them is turned aside at its outer end at H, or provided with other suitable engaging means to make in terlocking engagement with the material composing the body of the weight and thus prevent the loop from coming out of its place. The pulley and its bearings extend entirely above the upper end of the sash velght.
ii is a cap of similar material, which may be of any desired height and of approximately the same width and thickness as the body of the sash weight. This cap is provided with a central opening, J, through which the metal loop and pulley project and the sash cord also passes through it.
To prevent the cap from moving upon the weight, and the cord from chafing upon the sides of the opening, one member is provided with projections which engage the other member and prevent the cap from slipping.
These projections are shown as marginal flanges, K, upon the cap, which engage beveled edges, L, of the sash weight. I do not confine myself, however, to the exact form or position of these engaging parts.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a composition sash weight, of a pulley pivoted at a point adjacent to one end thereof and exterior thereto, and a bearing member for said pulley, said hearing member inserted in said sash weight and forming a reinforcing means therefor, and a cap detachably secured over said sash weight and pulley, said cap provided with an opening through which said pulley projects.
2. The combination with a composition sash weight, of a metal bearing member, axially secured thereon, engaging means on said bearing member, ournal bearings upon said bearing member, said journal positioned exterior to said sash weight, and a pulley mounted in said journal bearings, said hearing member extending into and forming a reinforcing means for said sash weight.
3. in a sash weight, a composition body, a metal loop projecting axially from one end thereof, journal bearings in the outer end of said loop, a pulley and shaft mounted in said journal bearings, the sides of said metal loop extending into thebody of said sash weight and serving as a reinforcing means therefor, and provided with engaging means, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the body of a sashweight and an axially projecting bearing member and pulley pivoted therein, of a cap member having central opening through which said bearing member and pulley project, said cap member and sash weight provided with interengaging parts.
5. The combination with a sash weight, an axially projecting journal bearing and puiley and shaft thereon, a detachable cap memreinforcing means for said body, a pulley mounted exterior to said body on said reinforcing means, and a cap detaehably mounted on said body, said cap provided with engaging means, and a central opening and a reinforcement for said engaging means.
7. In a sash weight, a body having bevelled edges, a bearing member extending above said body and also into the same, a
, pulley pivoted in said bearing member, and aoap mounted upon said body, said cap having downwardly extending edges engaging the bevelled edges 01" said body, and reinforcing means in said downwardly extend ing edges. a
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand this 8th day of July, 1920.
ARTHUR H; BAILEY.
' In presence of- WM. M. MONROE,
HERBERT KURNEY.
