IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,687, dated July 8, 1873; application filed February 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. DOOLITTLE, of Ansonia, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute a part of this specification, and represent, in-' Figure 1, a side View; Fig. 2, a vertical central section; and in Fig. 3, a detached view to illustrate the construction.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of burners designed for burning hydrocarbons, and commonly termed sunburners-that is, a burner in which a deflector is raised above the base, so as to leave an open space between the base and deflector; and the invention consists in the manner of uniting the deflector to the basethat is to say, by several posts having a tenonupon their upper end passing through a perforationin the deflector and bent down thereon, the lower end of the post passing through the base and resting upon a shoulder thereon, and a tenon upon the extreme lower end of the post passing through a perforation in the socket and bent down thereon, as more fully hereinafter described.
A is the socket, constructed to fit the neck of the lamp, and fitted with a wick-tube, B, and adjuster c, in the usual manner. The
base C extends over the socket, forming a ledge for the support of the chimney, also in the usual manner, and is secured to the socket by tenons a on the post of the socket, passing up through perforations in the base and-bent down thereon, as seen in Fig. 2. D is the deflector of the usual form, and-supported upon several posts E, more or less in number. These posts are formed with a tenon, d, at the lower end, and with a similar tenon, b, at their upper end, and an intermediate shoulder, a, distant from the upper tenon equal to the distance it is desired to have the deflector above the base. I The portion of the post f below the shoulder n passes through a slot or mortise in the base, as seen in Fig. 2, and the tenon 01 through a perforation in the socket, its end bent down upon the socket, as seen in Fig. 2, the shoulder 12 bearing upon the surface of the base, and held by the tenon d, supports the post in a rigid firm position. The tenons b on the posts pass through corresponding perforations in the deflector, and are bent down upon the deflector, as seen in Fig. 2, thus securing the deflector firmly to the base, and at the required distance therefrom; and the deflector, base, and socket are firmly secured together without the use of solder and the construction is such that the parts may be attached together with great rapidity and with less expense than by the usual method.
I claim as my invention- In a lamp-burner, consisting of the socket A with the base C attached thereto, and the deflector D supported above the said base, the supporting-posts attached to the socket below, extending up through the base to the deflector, and formed with projections or shoulders f to bear upon the base, and the deflector secured to the upper ends of the post, all substantially as set forth.
