UNITED STATES PATENT orFicEQ I WILLIAM WILLIAMS, OF TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
coivnznvnn SAFETY cA'rcrr ANDPOINT rnornoron ron BROOCH PINS.
i 1 iAp'plication filed .l'une 9,
To all whom it may Qooncern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM WILLIAMS, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, a resident of the city of Foronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Can,- ada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Safety Catches and Point Protectors for Brooch Pins, of which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to combined safety catches and point protectors for brooch pins and the object of the invention is to devise a simple and effective safety catch that can be readily applied to the brooch and which will prevent the liability of the pin becomin disengaged therefrom.
y invention consists of a combined safety catch and point protector constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a brooch showing my device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view thereof through the line 2-2 Figure 1'.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of a modi fied form of my device.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank from which my device is constructed, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view to Figure at showing the safet catch portion turned up at right angles 0 the point protector portion prior to forming such safety catch portion into the required shape.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the brooch having the usual pin 2 hinged thereto by the hinge 3. 4: is the central portion of my catch. 5 and 6 are the upper and lower portions thereof. 7 is the pin point protector.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a blank as shown in Figure 4;. I then turn the safety catch portions 5 and 6 at right angles to the pin point protector portion 7 as is clearly shown in Figure 5. The free ends of the portions 5 and 6 are then suitably bent into the position shown in Figure 2.
It will be seen that when such portions are bent the lower portion 6 forms a closed loop whereas the upper portion 5 forms an open loop, the distance between the ad- Spec ification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 14:, 1922.

jacent sides of these loops being less than the diameter of the pin 2.
In applying the pin to the safety catch it is only necessary to shove the same between the free ends 5 and 6 thereof. As
the portion 6 is enclosed it will be seen that the pin will not be permitted to be inserted into the loop formed thereby but will be inserted into the open loop formed by the portion 5 as is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The portion 6 is suitably secured to the brooch 1 by soldering the same thereto.
In the modification shown in Figure 3 it will be seen that the whole safety catch is turned over and the central portion 4: of the safety catch secured to the brooch 1.
From the above description it will be seen that I have devised a simple and effective safety catch which the pin will not be liable to become disengaged therefrom and further in which the portion 7 effectually covers the point of the pin.
In addition it will be seen that the combined safety catch and .pin point protector being constructed of one piece can be readily and cheaply manufactured.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with a brooch and the pin thereof, of a safety catch suitably secured to said brooch, said safety catch comprising a central portion. having the free ends thereof bent over to form loops, the distance between the adjacent sides of the loops being less than the diameter of the pin, one of the loops being closed and the other loop being open to receive the pin.
2. The combination with a brooch and the pin thereof, of a safety catch suitablv secured to said brooch, said safety catch comprising a central portion having the free ends thereof bent over to form loops. the distance between the adjacent sides of the loops being less than the diameter of the pin, one of the loops being closed. and the other loop being open to receive the pin and means for protecting the pin point.
3. The combination with a brooch and the pin thereof, of a safety catch suitably secured to said brooch, said safety catch comprising a central portion having the free ends thereof bent over to form loops, the dis tance between the adjacent sides of the loops being less than the diameter of the pin and a pin point protecting portion formed integrally with the central portion and adapted to be bent at right angles thereto for Govering the pin point. L A combined safety catch and pin poin protector comprising a central portion having its free ends suitably bent into open and closed loops respectively and a pin point protector portion formed integrally with the central portion and adapted to be turned over at right angles thereto to abut the free ends when formed into loops.
5. A combined safety catch and pin point of the loops.
.erally extending with the central portion.
LLIAM WILLIAMS.
