J; S. ERICKSONF COMB|NAT|ON LOCK- APPLICATION FILED JULY 3. m7.

PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. ERIOKSON, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATIQN LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Application filed July 8, 1917. Serial No. 178,441.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN S. Enronson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of \Vaukegan, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination locks, and has for its object the production of an improved construction of this character which is simple and efficient in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a face view 'of a combination lock, embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a side view of the same,
Fig. 3, a section of the same,
Fig. 4, an inner face view of a casing employed in the lock,
Figs. 5 and 6, detail views of a cam plate employed in the lock,
Figs. 7 and 8, detail views of one of a plu'ality of tumbler plates employed in the loc Figs. 9 and 10, detail views of one of two distancing rings employed in the lock,
Figs. 11 and 12, detail views of a holding plate employed in the lock,
Figs. 13 and 14, detail views of a tumbler plate employed in the lock,
Figs. 15 and 16, detail views ofanother tumbler plate employed in the lock, and
Figs. 17 and 18, detail views of the bolt employed in the lock.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings, comprises a suitable cylindrical casing or barrel 20, open at its inner side and set in a cylindrical recess in a base plate 21, being secured thereto by suitable screws. A guide plate 22 is arranged along one side of the base plate 21 and is slotted to permit the passage of the lock bolt 23 which slides radially through a slot 24 provided in casing 20. A notch or recess 25 is provided in casing 20 to accommodate a lug or head 26 formed on the inner side of the inner end of bolt 23. A cam plate 27 is arranged within a cylindrical recess in casing 20, adjacent base plate 21 and is provided with a spiral cam slot 28 operating over a pin or lug 29 on the out-er side of the inner end of bolt23, as indicated, the ar rangement being such that oscillation of cam plate 27 causes radial sliding of bolt as will be readily understood. (lam plate 27 is carried by a stem 30 protruding axially from barrel 20 and equipped with a knurled operating knob or nut 31, as indicated. I
A securing plate 32 is fitted within a cylindrical recess in barrel 20 adjacent plate 27, and is provided with lateral notches 33, adapted to engage with the heads of screws taking into screw holes 34 in said barrel. Plate 32 is provided with a sleeve 35, operating loosely on stem 30 and with a notch 36 adapted to accommodate the inner end of bolt 23 to permit radial sliding thereof. Tumbler plates 37 and 38 are loosely mounted on sleeve 35 and are provided with notches 39 adapted to be brought in registration with notch 36 to permit of inward movement of bolt 23, as will be readily understood, tumbler plate 37 being provided with a pin 40 on one side and tumbler plate 38 being provided with a pin 41 which protrudes from both sides, as indicated, said pins being adapted to cooperate in the usual manner to el'fect operation of the tumbler plates. A third tumbler plate 42 is arrangedin the barrel 20 and provided with a pin 43 to cooperate with pin 41, plate 42 being also provided with a lateral notch 44 arranged to register with notches 39 to permit inward sliding of bolt 23. Tumbler plate 42 is carried by a threaded sleeve 45, protruding from barrel 20 around stem 30 and carries a graduated dial 46 secured thereto by means of a knurled operating knob or nut 47, as indicated. Distance rings 48 are interposed between the tumbler plates and are provided with gaps or notches 49 to register with the notches 36, 39 and 44 to permit movement of the bolt 23, said rings being provided with lugs 50 fitting within a notch 51 in barrel 20 to maintain the rings in place. The tumbler plates and distance rings are also fitted within the recess in barrel 20 which thus serves as a guide and container for the working parts of the lock, facilitating assembling thereof and to insure smooth and continuous operation.
By this arrangement it will be observed that the tumbler plates 37, 38 and 42 may be readily set with their notches 39 and 44 in registration with notch 36 in plate 32, owing to the interengagement of the pins l0, 4-1 and 43, as will be readily understood. :Vhen such registration has been effected, the bolt 23 is readily withdrawn by rotating knob 31 through the action of cam slot 28 on pin 29. This constitutes a simple and effective combination lock verycompact in form and capable of economical construction.
\Vhile I have illustrated anddescribed the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A combination lock comprising a cylindrical casing having a base plate; a bolt slldably mounted in said casing; a stud on said bolt; a revoluble plate mounted in said casing and having an eccentric slot therein engagin said stud; a stem concentrically mounted on said revoluble plate and projecting outside of said casing; a supporting plate mounted in said casing above said revoluble plate and having a sleeve loosely fitting about said stem; slotted tumblers loosely mounted on said sleeve and normally preventing retraction of said bolt; a disc loosely mounted on said stem for positioning said tumblers to permit retraction of said bolt; and a knob on said stem for rotating said revoluble plate to retract said bolt, substantially as described.
2. A combination lock comprising a cylindrical casing having a base plate; a bolt slidably mounted in said casing; a stop on the inner end of said bolt engaging the inner Wall of said casing; a stud on said bolt; a revoluble plate mounted in said casing and having an eccentric slot therein'engag ing said stud; a stem concentrically mounted on said revoluble plate and extending outside of said casing; a. supporting plate rigidly mounted in said casing above said revoluble plate and having a sleeve loosely fitting about said stem; slotted tumblers loosely mounted on said sleeve and normally engaging said bolt to prevent retraction thereof; a collar mounted on said stem above said sleeve and carrying a closure for said casing; a disc mounted on said collar for positioning said tumblers; and a knob on said stem for rotating said revoluble plate to retract said bolt, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses:
JOHN S. ERICKSON.
Witnesses:
JOSHUA R. H. Po'r'rs, HELEN E. LILLIS.
