DIAL-LOCK STRUCTURE.

To all lwhom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM P. MosELEY, a vcitizen of the United States, and resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfieldl and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dial-Lock Structures; and I do hereby declare 'the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which nit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements inl dial locks,-one object of the invention be.,- ing to provide meansV for setting the conibination and operating the lock even though the dial has been broken oit in an' attempt to open the lock by'force. i
A further object isto provide an improved lockv for aV safe, the'idial for which can be removed while the same is bei-ng transported from point to point, butwhich can operated by authorized personsat the desired locations by an auxiliary dial aswell asby the usual duplicate dial.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and-pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a sectional View showing a dial lock structure embodying my invention, applied to a door.

In the drawing, a dial look 1 (which may be of any desired structure) is shown secured to a door 2, and the setting dial is shown at 3, the dial ring being represented at 1. The operating spindle 5 of the struc ture ispreferably made of hardened steel and instead of causing said spindle to extend into the operating or setting dial as has heretofore been the practice, the said spindle terminates in a head 6, the outer face of which is caused to lie approximately flush with the outer face of the door. The spindle head 6 is made conical in form and so seated in the door that the spindle will be prevented from being driven back into the lock in an attempt to operate the lock by force.
The face of the enlarged or headed end stamped' on the end of the spindle or it may be applied thereto in any desired manner.
The dial 3 is provided with a central opening which receives a threadedl hub 8, the

The jforward portion'of the bolt-13 is threaded vand screws into, socket 15 in the headed portionof the spindle 5. `The inner end of this socket may be somewhat'V contracted as at 15a and contains a hardened steed ball 16 (preferably driven thereinto) to obstruct or frustrate any attempt to drillthrough the spindle while the dial 3 is removed.
The hub member 8 which constitutes a part of the dial 3 is provided with two pins 17 to enter sockets 18 in the spindle head and these pins and sockets instead of .being located diametrically opposite each other are so located that the dial 3 can be applied in only one position, which lis the proper ene for operating the combination of the ock.
To remove the dial from the lock, the *I 3 may be shipped to a customer, and setting dials 3 may be made in duplicate and may be shipped-separately to the customer.

Having fully described my inventionwhatl I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with the spindle of a dial lock, of' auxiliary setting dial icarried by said spindle, anda dialada-pted `for re:-
movabl'e connection with saidlspindle, either ofsaid dials being adapted forfu'seto o-peratethe lock.
2. The combination-gWith the spindle-o` a dialy lock, ofl a setting dial: removably connected with said'spindle, anda concealed` setting dial carried by said spindlle.
