Be it known that I, RonLiN C. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dial Locks; and l do liei'eby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My improvement relates to an improvement in dial locks the object being to provide improved means for locking the cover to the lock case and for automatically lock ing the curb against accidental displacement when the cover is removed from the oase, andit consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.

The tumblers 8 are mounted on a sleeve (not shown) carried by the curb 9 and are turned or rotated by the dial knob 10, in the usual and well known manner.

The lock case 5 is provided at its opposite ends with the dovetailed slots 11 to receive similarly shaped tenons 12 formed integral with the cover 13, and the latter is provided :it its rear cud, or its end adjacent the curb und tuinblei's with an integral lug 14, which latter rests with its front edge adjacent the periphcries or rims of the tuinblers as shown in Figure 2, so that before the cover l can be slid endwise on the case to disengage the tenons 12 on the cover from the slots 11 in the ends of the lock case 5, the tumblers must be set upon the proper combination to bring the gatings therein into alinement with said lug. After the tumblers have been so set or manipulated, and the screw 17 securing the cover in place Vremoved, the cover may be moved or slid Specification of Letters Patent.

The curb 9, which as before explained carries the tumblers in the usual and well known manner, is held in place within the lock by a plurality (four in the present instance) of undercut lugs 18 and 18a formed integral with the lock case, the curb 9 being provided with peripheral notches 19 so located with relation to the lugs, that when the notches are in alinement with the lugs, the curb with its assembled tumblers thereon can be placed in position or removed from the lock, and when inserted or partly rotated, the periphery or rim of the curb will be carried under the shoulders 21 on the lugs and be held thereby against outward movement or displacement, the gating 20 in the curb cooperating with one of said lugs and performing the function of a notch 19, thus providing a notch for each holding lug.

The lug 18 is made hollow or recessed for the reception of the plunger 22, and the latter is provided with a stem 23. This stein passes through the bushing 24, which closes the recess in lug 18 and limits the outward movement of the plunger 22. The plunger is forced outwardly by the spring 25 which normally holds the free end of the stein of the plunger in contact with the inner face of the cover, but when the cover is removed the plunger is then free to be forced outwardly into the plane of the curb 9 and enter a notch 26 in said curb and thus lock the latter against accidental turning movement, and consequent displacement when the cover of the lock is not in place, the recess in the lug 18 being open in the plane of the curb and immediately under slioiildei 21. to perniit the plunger to enter notch 26. lVhen the plunger is within notch 26 iii the curb the latter will be locked against turir ing on releasing movement, hence in yorder to remove the curb and its nested tumblers, the plunger must be forced inwardly by pressure against the free end of the stem thereof so as to carry the plunger out of the plane of the curb. When the cover is in place, the plunger is as before explained held out of contact with the curb by said cover.

Figure 1 Shows the tumbleis set upon the proper combination for the entrance of the lug 14 into the gatings in the tumblers. thus dovetailed recesses and when the tenons are' clear of the dovetailed recesses or mortlses,`

the cover will be free to be removed. As the cover is removed, the plunger 22 will be"v forced outwardly by the spring and into the notch Q6 in the rim of the curb and preventsl any accidental rotary displacement of the curb and its associated tumblers. To remove the curb and tumblers, the plunger 22 is forced inwardly unt-il it is out of contact with the curb, thus permitting the latter' to be turned to bring the notches 19 therein, into alinement with the shoulders 12 on the lugs 18 and 18, a'tter which it and its connected tumblers may be lifted from the lock case 5.

2. The combination of a loch case having a series of under cut lugs, al curb having a notched periphery whereby it maybe entered between the lugs and locked by turning it to engage the shoulders on the lugs, a spring pressed plunger adapted to engagel the curb for locking it against turning movement, and a cover adapted Vwhen in place to bear against said plunger and hold it out of contactw'vith the curb.V

3. The combination of a lock case having a series of undercut lugs, a curb having a notched periphery whereby it may beentered between said lugs and locked by turning it to engage the shoulders formed b v undercutting the lugs, a spring actuated plunger adapted to engage the rim of the curb and prevent the latter from turning, the'said plunger being provided with a stem, and a" cover forV the case,VV the said cover adapted when in place to engage the stem of the plunger and hold the latter out of contact with the curb.
