IMPROVEMENT IN lNVALlD-BEDSTEADS.

Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No.140,6416, dated July 8, 1873; application filed May 31, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN ROBINSON, of Madison Station, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Invalid-Bedstead, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of a bedstead to which my improvement has been applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section of the same.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved bedstead, which shall be so constructed that the head part of the bed-bottom may be raised and lowered gently and gradually and to any desired extent, so as to change the position of the person lying upon the bed, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use. The invention consists in the right and left screw-rod, the nuts, the pivoted rods or bars, and the sockets, in combination with the slats and side bars of a bedstead, as hereinafter fully described.

A are the posts, B are the end boards, and O are the side rails, of the bedstead, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. To the inner sides of the side rails (J are attached cleats D in the ordinary manner, to support the cross bars E that support the longitudinal slats F that form the bed-bottom. The slats F are connected and held in their proper relative positions by the cross bars E or other cross-bars, and are jointed and hinged at a distance from the head of the bed equal to about one-third the length of the bed. To the head parts of the slats F is secured a crossbar, G, to the lower side of the ends of which are attached, or in them are formed, sockets H to receive the upper ends of the rods I, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the nuts J, through which pass the end parts of the rod K, upon one half of which is cut a right screwthread, and upon the other half a left screwthread, so that when the rod K is turned in one direction the nuts J may move toward each other; and when the said rod K is turned in the other direction the said nuts may move from each other, thus lowering and raising the head part of the bed-bottom as may be desired.

The journals of the rod K revolve in bearings in the lower part of the side rails of the bedstead; or in supports attached to said side rails so as to be beneath the side rails, to avoid the possibility of the bars or rods I descending so 10W as to reach the dead-point.

One of the journals of the screw-rod K projects, and to it is attached a crank, L, for con venience in turning the said rod.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The right and left screw-rod K, the nuts J, the rods or bars I, and the sockets H, in conr bination with the slats and side rails of a bedstead, substantially as herein shown and described.
