COASTER.
Let-06,269.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 14, 1922.
Application filed November 15, 1920. Serial No. 424,167.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. MAZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coasters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to coasting devices adapted for juvenile amusement, and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and the novel features of which are specifically pointed out in the claim.
Fig. l is a plan view of a coaster embodying my invention in preferred form, and
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; dotted lines indicating difierently adjusted positions of certain of the parts. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail view.
The body portion of the device is made up of parallel spaced runners a a, which are ordinarily arranged for sledding on snow or ice as indicated, but may obviously be provided with coasting wheels when desired; transversely extending plat-form members consisting preferably of strong strips of wood Z) 6 spaced apart and rigidly secured at their ends to the runners, with the fore ward and rear ones thereof forming raised guard-ledges 6 b and additional led 'e strips 0 c at the sides of the platform serving also to more rigidly connect the transverse platform members Z) 6 together and to the runners; the effect being to provide in a simple manner, a strong and safe standing or seating platform for the operator, and for connection of the steering tongue.
The steering tongue of, which is provided at its forwardly projected end with a steering runner e, is rigidly bolted at its rear portion underneath the platform members Z) 6 and has its intermediate portion rigidly connected by diagonal braces f f to the respective runners a on. These rigid connections of the tongue to the platform and runners, are made adjustable as shown, so as to permit of properly positioning the steering bar handle hereinafter referred to; the bolts h which secure the tongue to the platform, being temporarily loosened to enable move ment of the tongue forwardly or backwardly, and the bolting of the connecting portion f of the diagonal bracing bars f f to the tongue being correspondingly adjusted as indicated. These braces f f are also adapted to provide foot supports f for the seated operator, at either side of the tongue and at a conveniently fixed distance from the platform; while the position of the steering handle g is variable to suit either a sitting or standing position of the operator.
The steering runner e is provided with a pivoting standard is for connection to the tongue and to the steering bar 9. This standard is formed as shown, from a single piece of sheet metal, with spanning portions m m secured to the runner e at the lower ends; with a pivot jaw 02 at their upper ends for connection of the steering bar 9'; and with rearwardly-turned portions 7) p forming pivotal connections to the tongue (Z and pivot bar 76 thereon; so that lateral movement of the steering bar, in any conveniently adj usted position of its handle end 9 will turn the steering runner 6 upon the tongue (Z as required for any desired change of direction. The ledge-protected platform insures safety to the operator, and the tongue connections provide a simple and rigid construction in connection with desirable adjustability of the steering-bar handle and fixed support for the feet of a seated operator.
What I claim is:
In a coaster, a tongue having a vertical pivot at the forward end thereof, a single traction member carried by the pivot beneath the tongue, a steering handle connected to the traction member forwardly of the pivot and the tongue, a platform or seat, traction members fixed to the opposite sides of said seat, means attaching the rear end of the tongue flatly against the underside of the platform substantially midway between the last named traction members for permitting longitudinal adjustment of the tongue forwardly or rearwardly relative to the platform, and diagonal foot-rest-forming braces having their rear ends secured to the forward ends of said last named traction members and their forward ends adjustably attached to the tongue forwardly of the seat for permitting adjustment of the tongue while maintaining the portion of the braces with the seat.
In testimony whereof I alfix my signature.
HARRY A. MAZER.
