UNl'lED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONY :s'nnvron LonennBane-n, or oRowLnY, LOUISIANA.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb. 14 1922.
Application filed February l4, 1921. Serial No. 444,881.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that .ANTHON'Y Bnrnron LONGENBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crowley, in the-parish of Acadia and State of Louisiana has invented certain new and useful improvements in Operating Mechanism for Window Shutters, Blinds and the like, of which the fol lowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in operating mechanism for window shutters, blinds and the like. I An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character whereby the blind may be operated from the interior of the room and shifted to anydesircd adjusted position. i I
A further object of the invention is to provide an operating mechanism for blinds of the character which are provided with pivot slats adapted to be shifted to open and closed positions, of operating mechanism for the blinds whereby the blind may be swung to an open position if desired, or the slats thereof opened, the operations'being accomplished from the interior of the window to which the blind is appliedwithout the necessity of opening the window.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exteriorly simple in construction and oper ation and the parts of which are not readily destroyed in use;
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure l is a sectional view taken through a window casing and sill provided with my improved blind operating mechanism,
Figure 2 is a plan view partially in section thereof,
Figure 3 is a plan of the'bearing plate,
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 2, and
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the blind guide.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 indicates a plate adapted to be secured to the sill 11 of the window exteriorly of the window proper.
shown a This plate is provided upon the inner side thereof or that side disposed at the window with the bearing 12, preferably formed by looping an integral portion of the plate. Bore 13 is formed in the window frame alining with the bearing 12 and extending beneath the upper plate 14 of the lower or sill frame of the window.
A tubular operating bar 15 is provided having formed thereon adjacent its outer end worm 16. This rod extends through the bearing 12 and through the bore 18 and has its inner end terminating inwardly of the sill frame a sufficient distance to permit grasping thereof for operation. The outer end of the rod beyond the worm 16 is again reduced as at 17 for the reception of a retaining'bearing 18 which is formed separately fr m plate 10, and secured thereto as at 19 after the insertion of operating rod 15 into position.
The plate 10 has rotatably mounted therei on a worm disc or gear 21 meshing with the worm'16' of the operating rod 15. To this worm disc and to the upper surface thereof is secured one end of an operating arm 22 which is preferably offset intermediate its ends and is provided upon the free end thereof with a sphericalengaging member 28. V v f A guide member 24 isprovided tubular inform and having the ends thereofbeveled as at 24 tofpermit of the ready insertion of securing means'25 whereby the guide member may be secured to the shutter S. The inner face or-wall of the guide member 24 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 26 through which the arm 22 may operate, the head 23 thereof being disposed within the guide member 24. The slot 26 is preferably somewhat enlarged as at 27 at its central portion in order to permit of the insertion of a further securing means 28, in order that the guide member 24 may be rigidly secured to the shutter.
The bore 29 of the tubular operating bar 15 forms a mounting for the blind slat opcratin member 30 comprising a bar extending through the bore and provided upon its outer end with an angular portion 31 adapted to engage beneath the lower surface of operating rod R to which the blind slats B are secured for simultaneous operation. The inner end of the operating rod 15 and the inner end of the blind slat operating rod are provided with enlarged grip ping portions 20 and 32 respectively whereby they may be grasped for rotation.
In the operation of my device when it is desired to open the shutter, this may be readily accomplished by grasping the enlargement 20 of the rod 15 and rotating the rod. This rotation is transmitted to the worm disc 21 and the arm 22 thereby caused to isolate the engagement of the head 23 of the arm in the guide member 2a secured to the shutter causing the shutter to be swung about its pivots and to open. When the shutter has been opened the desired distance the bar 15 may be released and will prevent return of the shutter by reason of the fact that the worm and worm disc construction is employed. When it is merely desired that the blind slats shall be opened to admit a small amount of light, this may be accomplished by rotating the rod 30 to bring the arm 31 thereof into engagement with the lower end of the slat operating rod B so that this rod is elevated and the slats rotated about their pivots to the desired extent.
It will be obvious that while I have disclosed my operating mechanism as applied to a single shutter by a simple arrangement of gearing connecting the operating rod 15 with a similar arrangement, a pair. of shutters may be simultaneously operated, or
where a pair of shutters are employed the operating mechanism may be applied to each shutter so that these shutters may be separately controlled.
It will likewise be obvious that my device by reason of the simplicity of its construction and operation and by reason of the fact that it not only affords an operating mechanism, but also, a locking mechanism for the blind, is particularly well adapted for the use for which it is intended. It will further be obvious that the construction herein embodying the usual window and pivoted blind therefor, the blind being provided with the usual pivoted slats having an operating rod connected thereto, of a tubular shaft mounted in said casing for rotary movement, operating means connected to the blind, said means being movably engaged with and operated by the tubular shaft, a rod extending through said tubular shaft for rotary movement therein, one end of the rod hav ing an arm disposed at right angles to said rod, said arm being adapted to engage the operating rod of the slats to move said slats independently of the blind.
2. The combination with a window casing embodying the usual window and pivoted blind therefor, the blind being provided with the usual pivoted slats having an operating rod connected thereto, of a tubular shaft rotatably mounted in the casing, a worm gear surrounding the shaft adjacent one end thereof. operating means operatively connected to the blinds, said means being operatively engaged with the worm for operating the shutter, and a rod rotatably mounted within the tubular member and projecting beyond the worm gear,'one end of said rod having an arm adapted to engage the operating rod of the slats for operating the slats through the medium of the operating rod, a
In testimony whereof I hereunto afilx my signature.
