ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN PAUL, 0F LANSING, MICHIGAN,
Amman GUIDE r03. nmmuns.
To all whom it may concern.
' Be it known that I, STEPHEN PAUL,, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new andluseful Improvements in Adjustable Guides for Hammers, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to punch presses, hydraulic hammers or any other structure which has guides for a reciprocable member and wherein the guides are held against accidental displacement and adapted to be adjusted from time to time to compensate for wear.
My invention aims to provide positive and reliable means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for adjusting and holding view of one ofthe frames of the machine;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and j Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached adjusting member. I
For the purposes of showing theguide adjusting means, it is thought only necessary to show a portion of a machine having frames l'between which reciprocates a head or member 2. The confronting faces of the frames 1 have longitudinal recesses 3 for guides 4 and the upper and lower ends of the guides are beveled inwardly from the inner faces thereof to the outer faces. Thebeveled end faces of the guides are designated 5 and said end faces have grooves 6' t receive the tongues 7 of adjusting mem bers 8. The adjusting members 8 are somewhat in the form of wedges having beveled walls 9 and flat walls 10, the flat walls 10 engaging the fiat end walls of. the recesses 3, as best shown in Fig. 2.
The adjusting members 8 have integral I. Specification of Letters Patent.
rods or bolts 11 extending through openings 12 in each of the frames 1 and the inner ends of the openings 12 are enlarged, as at through openings 18 provided therefor in each of the guides 4, the said'openings 18 aligning with the openings 15. The tapered members .18 have screw threaded shanks 19 for nuts 20 which bear against the sides of the frame 1 and ermit of the tapered mem:
bers 17 being shifted in either direction to distend the guides 4, thus ermitting of said guides being properly a justed for a reciproca-ble movement of the head or member 2. After the guides 4 are adjusted by the tapered members 17 the adjusting members 8 may be tightened to positively clamp Patented Feb. '7, 1922. Appllcation fil e d October 4;;1920. SerlalNoQ414A12.
which bear tapered members 17 extending the guides against the members 17 and between the end walls of the recess 3.
' It is thought that the utility of my invention will be apparent without further description, and I reserve the right to make such structural changes as fall within the scggglof the appended claims.
at I claim is 1. In a forging machine, a frame having a recess and openings communicating, with the ends of said recess, a guide in said re-' cess and having beveled ends, and adjusting members in the'ends of said recess clamping the beveled ends of said guide in said recess and operatable' through the openings of said frame.
2. A guide for a forging machine, as characterized in claim 1, wherein said adjusting members have flat walls engaging end walls of said recess, and tongues extending into the beveledends ofsaid guide.
3. In a forging machine, a frame having a recess, and sets of openings communicating with said recess, a guide in the frame recess, adjusting members between theends of. said guide and the ends of said recess,
rods carried by said adjusting members and extending through one set of frame openings, nuts on said rods' against said frame, and adapted to be adjusted to clamp said mil adjust iiig mel iber's ai gainst said guide and means extending through said guide "ahd the other set of fr-ameizopenin'gsfor'shift-"i ing said guide when said adjusting members are 1005. i
4. A guide for a forglng machine, as
eharaetel iz edxin claim 3,; wherein said ad-,, justing members are adapted te 'et 'act said I guide and Salad means extendsaidguide relative to said frame.
v.In testimony whereof I afiix signa-
