UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. ROLFES, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOB TO HANDLAN-BUCK MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
BAIL HOLDER FOR LAN TEENS.
Application filed June 20,
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, G ORGE I-I. RoLrns, a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bail Holders for Lanterns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawtain elements of a lantern equipped with a bail holder embodying the features of this invention. I
Fig. II is a fragmentary view showing the bail holder applied to the bail.
Fig. III is a vertical section showing the elements illustrated in Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a perspective view of the bail holder.
.Fig. V is an enlarged horizontal section the line V--V in Fig. III. 7
The body of the lantern comprises a hood A mounted on a frame including guard wires 1 and 1', the wires 1 having outwardly or eyes, 2 adapted to receive the lower ends ofa bail B, the lower ends of said bail having eyes 3 cooperating with the eyes 2 so as topivotally connect the bail to the frame.
The lantern frame also includes a guard wire 4 surrounding the wires 1 and 1' at points immediately below the eyes 2, and the top wire 5 located within the lower marin of the hood A. The upper ends of the w1res 1 and 1 are provided with hooks 6 adapted to receive the top wire 5 as shown in Figs. I and III.
As an illustration of the invention I have shown a bail-holder comprising a single strip of sheet metal bent to provide a fold 7 and upper and lower arms 8 and 9 extending from said fold.
The fold? is provided with a bail-receiving slot 10 extending into the adj oining ends of the upper and lower arms 8 and 9, as shown most clearly by Figs. III and IV,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1922 1921. Serial No. 478,886..
I said bail-receiving slot being open at the fold to receive the bail, and the adjoining ends of said upper and lower arms 8 and 9 being separated from each other to engage different portions of the bail. The arms 8 and 9 are thus bifurcated to receive the bail.
At the ends remote from the fold 7 the arms 8 and 9 are separated from each other to engage different portions of the lantern frame, the upper arm 8 being provided with an eye 11 surrounding the top wire 5 to provide a pivotal connection between the bail holder and the lantern frame. A slot 12 is formed across the eye 11 and this slot extends into the arm 8 so as to receive the I adjacent guard wire 1, the latter being straddled by and engaged with the legs at opposite sides of the slot 12.
A slot 18 is formed in the lower end of arm 9 to receive a portion of the guard wire 1 which is straddled by the slotted end of arm 8. The slot 13 is ofiset, as shown most clearly in Fig. V, to provide a detent 13' adapted to engage guard wire 1 to latch the pivoted bail holder in its operative positlon.
The bail holder herein shown may be made of a single piece of sheet metal, and
its various elements areso combined with each other and with the lantern frame, that they provide a very strong device for locking the bail. The arms 8 and 9 are separated from each portions of the bail, so the latter is securely held at separate points adjacent to the fold' T. The) bail holder itselfis securely attached to the lantern through the medium of the pivot eye'11 surrounding-the top'wire 5, this end of arm 8 being slotted to straddle and engage the adjacent guard wire 1. To firmly secure the bail holder at different points on the lantern frame, the lower end of arm 9 is separated from arm 8, as previously pointed out, and this lower end is slotted to straddleand engage a guard wire 1 at a point some distance below the arm 8.
When the bail holder is not in service, it 00- cupies the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. III. To lock the bail it is only necessary to shift the bail holder from the last mentioned position to the position shown by full lines in FigvIII, and the detent 13 (Figs, IV and will then cooperate with a guard wire 1 to lock the bail holder in its operative position.
I claim:
1. A lantern having a body including a frame, a bail pivoted to said body, and a ent portions of said frame, one of the last mentioned ends being pivotally connected to said frame and the other being bifurcated to embrace a portion of said frame.
2. A lantern having a body including a frame, a bail pivoted tosaid body, and a bail-holder comprising a pair of arms each having a bifurcated end to receive said bail, the bifurcated ends of said arms being separated fromeach other to embrace and engage difi'erent portions of the bail, the other ends of said arms being separated from each other to engage different portions of said body, one of the last mentioned ends being pivoted tosaid frame and the other being provided with a detent adapted to interlock with said frame.
3. A lantern having a body including a frame, a bail pivoted to said body, and a bail-holder comprising a pair of arms each having a bifurcated end to receive said bail, the bifurcated ends of said arms being separated from each other to embrace and engage different portions of the hail, the other ends of said arms being separated from each other to engage different portions of said body, one of the last mentioned ends having a slot for the reception of a portion of said frame and the other having a pivot eye embracing one of the members of said frame and a slot extending from said pivot eye to receive anothermember of said frame.
4. A lantern having a frame, a bail pivoted to said frame, and a bail-holder in the form of a loop having a fold and bailengaging arms connected by and extending from said fold, said loop having a bailreceiving slot open at the fold and extending into the adjoining ends of said arms, said adjoining ends of the arms being separated from each other to embrace different portions of the bail, the other ends of said arms being separated from each other and provided with slots to receive different portions of said frame, and one of the last,
mentioned ends being pivoted to said frame.
5. A lantern having a frame, a bail pivoted to said frame, and a bail-holder comprising a single strip of metal having a fold and upper and lower bail-engaging arms connected by and extending from said fold, said fold being provided with a bailreceiving slot extending into the adjoining ends of said upper and lower arms, said bail-receiving slot being open at the fold to receive the bail, and the adjoining endsof said upper andlower arms being separated from each other to engage different portions of the'bail, the other ends of said upper and lower arms being separated from each other to engage different portions of said frame, one of the last mentioned ends being bifurcated to receive a portion of said frame and from each other to engage different portions of the bail, the other ends of said upper and lower arms being separated from each other and provided with slots to receive different portions of said frame, the last mentioned end of the upper arm having an eye whereby it is pivoted to said frame, and the slot in the last mentioned end ofthe lower arm.
being offset to provide a detent whereby the bail-holder is held in its operative position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto afiix my signature.
GEORGE H. ROLFES.
