RAIL JOINT. i
Application filed July 12,
To all 'whom t may Gomera:
Be it known that we, THEoDon KozLosKY and'EnwAnn C. Kosrowsni, citizens of Poland and of the United States, respectively,re siding at'Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Joints, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to rail joints and it has for a general object to provide a novel and efficient railjoining means whichwill obviate the use of iish-plates and bolts. i
More specifically speaking Athe invention has for an object to provide a spring actuated locking device which is entirely concealed when in use within the rail body..4
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages Y thereof, reference will be had to the ,follows ing description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claimsin which the various `novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth,
Fig. 1 of the drawings is a plan View of a pair of separated rail ends provided-with our improved joining'means.
` Fig. 2 is a part side View and part longif tudinal sectional view, of the railV ends, the
l sectional portion vof the view being vtaken on the line 2-2`of Figi.
Fig-.g3 is a plan view of al portion of a track having the, invention applied thereto.
Fig. 4 is a part elevation and part longitudinal section on the same line as Fig. 2, but showing the rails joined. i
Referring now to the drawings, the reference numerals 10 and 11 indicate a pair of rail ends. According to the present invention the tread 10 of the rail 10 is cut 0E at a distance from the end, while the web 10a is widened considerably to form a block 12. This block has a pair Vof slotted recesses 13 formed on the underside thereof and communicating both with the bottom and end of the block.
These recesses 13 present downwardly and i means of plates 35 slidable in dovetail rearwardly inclined to walls such as 13 and have upwardly o set sockets .14 near their inner ends.
The rail 11 has the web portionof the end thereof widened as at 15 to approximately the width of the block 12, the main body 11:1 of the web terminating short of the tread 11 a distance corresponding 'to the cut out in the end of the thread 10 of rail 10, leav- Speecation of Letters Patent.'k Patented Jail. 31, 1922-.
1921. serial No. 484,135'.
ing a projecting treadelement 11b WhicheX- tends over the block` 12.
The rail' 11 has projected forwardlytherefrom a pair of tongues 18 which are iush on their bottom sides with'the base of the `rail and are shaped to fit in the recesses 13 in block 12, presenting inclined top'fa'ceslS I corresponding to thel inclined tops 13 of` lsaid recesses. y To lock the rail ends againstlongitudinal movement. away from one another' 'I providein each tongue 18 a latch 2O 'pivoted between its ends as at 21 in a recess 22 in said tongue and having an upturned'endp20 nor`` mally pressed into the socket 14 by a spring 23, the` different parts being so arranged that the latch ends 20 will'enter the open end of recessesf13 when the railsl are moved longitudinally toward one another and will bepresseddownward'by the inclined surf faces 13 .until they snap into the sockets 14.V
To enable `the latches 20 to be depressed to 1 be disengaged from the sockets 14. when the rail endsare being disassembled, a pair of small passages 24 leaddownward through the block 12 into the y, sockets 14 and are adapted to have a pin or othersuitable im'- plement inserted therein to 'depress the latches.
`Additional lockiing means the rail endsis provided 'in the form off-a pair off vertical bolts such as 26 slidable in recesses such as 27 in the block 12 and each having a T-head 28 adapted to be projected downward into a socket 29vinlthe tongue 18 and given a partial turn to V cause its head 28 to engage in offsets 30,-from said socket.- VThese bolts 26 are pressed upwardly to cause their T-v heads to clear the sockets by means of coiled i springs such as 31 surrounding the same and-bearing against flanges such as 32 on Vthel bolt, `the latter havingv squared upper .4 ends such as 33 to receive av wrench or span-I ner for turning the `bolts to enter the lheads 28, in the offsets 30.V Y
The bolts 26 are' preferably covered by ioo 4grooves such as'36 in the top face of block f 12, the 'squared upper ends of said boltsVK means will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
The plates 35 are drawn back in the grooves 86 to allow the springs 31 to raise the heads of bolts 26. The two rails are then moved longitudinally into engagement, the tongues 18 engaging in the recesses 13, the latch ends 20 being depressed by engagement with the inclined walls 13 until they snap into the sockets 14:. The bolts 26 are then pushed downward andgiven a quarter turn to engage their T-heads in the offsets and the plates 35 replaced.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as newand desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows l. In combination, a pair of rail ends one of which has the 'tread terminating short of the end thereof and a widened block-like eX- tension presenting a pair of recesses, the other rail end having a projecting tread element engaging over said extension and a pair of tongues engagingin said recesses.
2. In combination, a pair of'rail ends one of which has the tread terminating short of the end thereof and a widened block-like extension presenting a pair of recesses, the other rail end having a projecting tread ele ment engaging over said extension and a pair of tonguesV engaging in said recesses,
Vand'latches carried by said tongues and engaging in sockets offset from said recesses.
3. In combination, a pair of rail ends one of which has the tread terminating short of the end thereof and a widened block-like extension presenting a pair ofn recesses, the other rail end having a projecting tread element engaging over 'said extension and' a pair of tongues engaging in said recesses, and latches'carried by said tongues and engaging in sockets offset from said recesses, the said block having passages leading therethrough to the said sockets.
4. In combination, a pair of rail ends one of which has the tread terminating short of the end thereof and a widened block-like eX- tension presenting a pair of recesses, the other rail end having a projecting tread elef ment engaging overV said extension and a lpair of tongues engaging in said recesses, said tongues having sockets in their upper faces presenting Yinterior offsets, and T- headed bolts carried by said extension and adapted to engage in said offsets.
5. In combination, a pair of rail ends one of which has the tread terminating short of the end thereof and a widened block-like eX- tension presenting a pair of recesses, the other rail end having aprojecting tread element engaging over said vextension and a pair of tongues engaging in said recesses, and locking means carried by saidblock and tongues and comprising a pair of latches and a pair of T-headedlbolts.
6. In combination, a pair of rail ends one of which has the tread terminating short ofV the end thereof and a widened block-likerexa tension presenting a pair of recesses, .thev other rail end having a projecting tread element engaging over said extension and a ment engaging over said extension and' aV pairof tongues engaging in said recesses,
and latches carried by said tongues'l and engaging in sockets offset from said recesses,
said recesses having inclined' faces adapted to engage and depress said latches, and
springs normallyV urging said latches up? ward to locking position. Y
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures.
