To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WENZL RICHARD,

FISCHER, a citizen of the United States of- America, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the 'following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

a This invention relates to rail joints, and

has for its object to provide a rail joint, in

a manner as hereinafter set forth, whereby the opposing ends-of a pair of rails are connected together without the employment of nuts and bolts, at the same time providing for the necessary contraction and expansion of the track rails when connected together.

Further objects of the invention are to provide a rail joint which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, conveniently set up and inexpensive.

With the foregoing and other objects in *view, the invention consists of the novel con-.

struction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood, that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereto appended.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 and 6 denote a pair of track, rails with one end of the rail 5 opposing the end of the rail 6. The web? of each of said rails is provided with a rectangular opening 8 and the web 7 of each of said rails, at each end is cut away as at 9. When the rails. 5 and 6 are arranged in longitudinal alinement, the cut away portion of one rail opposes the cut away portion 9 of the other rail thereby providmg a rectangular opening.

The reference character 10 denotes an inner fish plate which is arranged against one side of the webs of the

5 and 6 and further overlaps the bases 11 of the said rails, the inner fish plate being flanged as at 12. The inner face of the fish plate 10 has projecting laterally therefrom a series of tongue 13, which extend through and project from the openings 8 as "well as extending through and projecting from the opening formed by the cut away portions 9.

The reference character' 14: denotes an outer fish plate which is formed with a series of openings 15 for the passageof the tongues 13. Each of the tongues 13 is formed, near its outer end with a rectangular opening 16,

What I claim is In a rail joint, the combination with a pair of rails, comprising base, web and tread portions, having their ends opposing each other and with the web at the opposing ends cut away, said cut away ortions registering to provide an opening, an inner fish plate positioned against one side of said rails and having its face portion bent over to over-lap the base of the rail and having its upper portion formed with integral lateral tongues extending through and projecting from said opening, each of said tongues being formed adjacent to the outer ends with a rectangular opening, the outerwalls each being beveled, an outer fish plate formed with an opening adapted for the reception of said tongue and adapted for engagement With outer fish late for retaining the Wedge in the outer sides of said rails and having its position. 10 base portion bent over to over-lap the face In testimony whereof I afiix my signature of said rails, and a Wedge extending through in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
