Description

A. L. HANSON.
DARNING FORM APPLICATION FILED MAY 31. 1919.

new a he e ANDREW L. HANSON, OF CUMBERLAND CENTER, MAINE.
EARNING FORM.
Ti,4ld,763.
Application filed May 31,
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW L. HANsoN, a citizen. ot' the United States, residing at Cumberland Center, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Darning Forms, of which the following is a specification.
lily present invention pertains to forms for use in darning, and is designed more especially for the darning of the foot portions of stockings.
The object of the invention is to provide an adjustable darning form-i. e., a darning form that is adapted to be put in the foot form of a stocking with facility and then extended as to length, with a view to distending the foot portion and maintain it in loot form during the darning operation.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention in all ct its details will be fully understood from the :following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
liigure l is aside elevation of my novel :form in closed or contracted state.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical. section showing the form as extended or increased in length.
Figure 4 i top plan view of the extended form.
Figure 5 is an enlarged transverse section taken through the form, and hereinafter specifically referred to. 7
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views oi? the drawing.
Among other elements my novel form comprises heel member 1 and a toe member 2. These members are preferably, though not necessarily, hollow, and made of sheet" metal or other material suitable to their purpose.
In combination with the hollow memberl and toe member 2, l'employ a metallic oval. continuance loop 8, preferably of wire, and possessed of resiliency. Thesaid'metallic loop 3 is held to the members 1 and 2 through the medium of retaining guides 4 which are preferably, though not necessarily, in the form of metallic loops, as. shown, connected to the inner surface of the members 1 and 2 so as to slide upon the side portions of the loop 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1922.
1919. Serial N0.300,815.
Referring now to 3 I also slightly groove the curved ends of loop 8, as shown at 25 to enable said ends to move and be guided under flat metal straps longitudi nally extended and attached to the interior of said members and arranged to rest in said groove. it will also be appreciated that the springing of the wire loop ll together with the interposition of the ends of the said wire loop between the members 1 and 2 and the as 5, will hold the members 1 and 2 .nst accidental movement on the loop during darning of holes in the toe and heel portions of a sock or stocking. I would have it understood, however, that when the members l. and 2 are solid, the straps V altogether omitted.
Upon the completion of the darning operation the form may obviously be readily shortened or lengthened by pressure on the ends of the form while in the stocking, thus.
moving one end ofthe form relative to the other on the loop and in substantially the plane of the loop. T
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A form comprising members one of which is movable away from and toward the other, a member connecting the first-named members and upon which the said movable member may be moved longitudinally toward and from the other member, and a longitudinal strap carried by the movable memher and arranged at the opposite side of a portion of the connecting member, with ref erence to a. portion or" the movable member, and irictionally bearing against the connecting member.
2. [a darning form comprising two end members with og ienings in their adjacent ends, a connecting oval loop having its cnrvedends loosely mounted in said open ends and means for slidably connecting said members the sides of said loops.
A darning form comprising two members with openings in their adjacent ends, a connecting oval loop having its curved ends loosely. mounted in said open ends, means for connecting said members to the sides of said loop, and means for yieldingly bonding 0 may be lOO the curved ends of the loop to the bottom of ANDREW L. HANSON.
