Description

CHAS.
E. BROVN, OF NEW YORK,
MODE OF HANGING DOUBLE DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 14,047, dated January 8, 1856.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BROWN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Double Doors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a front view of a pair of doors, the framing being bisected vertically and showing my improvement. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in having the doors swing on shafts or axes which are attached to the upper and lower ends of the doors and having the upper shafts connected by gearing or by pulleys and a chain as will be' presently shown and described, whereby one door is made to open and close simultaneously with its fellow, the two doors swinging in the same or opposite direction as may be desired.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents framing in which two doors B, B, are hung. This framing may be constructed in the usual manner. The doors have each an aXis or small shaft (a), at their lower and outer ends, which axes or shafts are stepped in the sill of the frame as plainly shown in Fig. l. To the upper and outer end of each door there is attached an axis or shaft These axes or shafts (o) pass up through the upper cross piece of the framing A, and have each a pulley, C, upon them. A cross chain D, passes around the two pulleys C. The doors B, B, swing upon the axes or shafts (a), and the two doors are connected by the chain D, so that as one door is opened or closed the other will be operated simultaneously with it. The edges of the doors B, B, may be provided one with a beveled tongue (c), and the -other with a correspending shaped groove (d), see Fig. 2.
By having the chain, D, crossed the doors will both swing in the same direction when one door only is pushed or moved by hand, but by having it pass straight or direct around the pulleys, C, one' door will swing in an opposite direction to the other. The latter mode in some cases may be-preferablel Instead of the chain, D, and pulleys, C, gear wheels E, may be employed as shown in red Fig. l. Four small wheels or two large wheels or geared sectors may be used when the doors are intended to be swung in the same directions, or any even number of wheels may be employed. If the doors are to swing in opposite directions, three wheels only will be required or any uneven number.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Connecting double doors by an endless chain, D, passing around pulleys, C, on the shafts or axes of the doors, or by gearing arranged in a'ny proper way, so that as one door is opened or closed the other will be moved simultaneously in a similar or opposite direction as described.
