n Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to 1mprovements in wrenches.
My object is to produce a wrench which f 4 shall be of a comparatively simple construction, easily operated for quick adjustment, firmly sustained in adjusted position to properly engage with an object between the jaws thereof, and readily released from' such engagement. f
l accomplish the foregoing, and many other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such' as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.

Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the handle of my improved wrench. The handle has one of its ends widened outwardly from one of the edges thereof to provide a head 2. The head has its outer face channeled longitudinally and received in the said channel are the ears 3 formed on the inner face of a jaw 4. The j aw is of a width equalling that of the head and has its active face toothed or serrated. The jaw has its active face arranged at an inclination, and the ears thereof are engaged by pivots 5 which pass transversely through the head. The ear at the thickened end of the jaw has an elongated opening through which the pivot 5 passes, and the numeral 6 indicates an arched spring which is received in the recess in the head 2 which contacts with the jaw to normally swing the same at an outward inclination with respect to said jaw. d
On what may be termed the shank portion of the handle 1, that is the portion thereof to the rear 'of the head 2, there is arranged a yoke-like housing 7. The housing is preferably removably secured to the shank by removable means 8. At the inner end of the housing the shank is provided with spacedy ears 8 and 9 respectively that extend beyond both of the edges of the said shank.
, The movable jaw is indicated'by the numeral 10 and is provided vwith an angle shank 11 formed with a toothed edge 12. The
shank 11 passes through the housing 74 over one of the edges of the shank of the stationary jaw and is also guided between theears 7. The shank 11 is formed with an upstanding lug 13 that is in the path of contact lwith the inner end of the housing 7, whereby the jaw 5 is limited in its outward movement with respect to thel stationary jaw. On the edge ofthe shank of the stationary liaw-that is the portion thereof which is in dica-ted in the drawings by the numeral 14,
opposite the toothed surface'12of the shank 11, I secure one end of aflat spring 15. The
opposite end ofthis spring is rounded upon itself as at 16, and theA said rounded portion contacts with the toothed edge .12 :of the shank 11 canting or tilting the said shank and consequently bringing the jaw 10 at an inclination with respect to the jaw 4.
The shank 14, between the jaw and the spring 15 has its edge formed with a rounded depression 17, and one of the walls thereof has a transverse rounded slot 18 therethrough. The slot 18 provides a bearing opening for the rounded head portion 19 of a dog 20. The dog is movable in the space between the toothed edge of the jaw 11 and the wall of the depression 17. The side walls of the housing 7, in a line with the dog 2O are depressed outwardly to provide for the free movement of links 21 which are disposed between the sides of the shank 14 and the side walls of the housing and which are pivoted, as at 22 to the dog 20. To the outer end links 21 there is pivoted therebetween, as at 2,3, one end of the operating lever 24. The lever is arranged at an outward inclination from its pivotal connection with the links, and is provided with an enlargedy or thickened portion which is pivoted, as at 25, between the pairs of ears 9. The ears may be formed on the ends of plates 26, or both the plates and the ears may be integrally formed with the handle 1 and shank 14 of the links. The plates 26 provide a pocket for the outer end of the handle whereby the said operating end of the handle cannot be accidentally contacted. The plates 26, near the said outer or operating end of the handle 24 are provided with arched depressions 27 forming a Space whereby the 1finger of the portion 14 of the handle 1 and which con- Y tacts with the inner surface of the lever.
VIt is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of the improvement will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate. Av pressure on the lever against the tension oi' the spring 28 will 'cause' the latter to swing on its pivot 25and draw on the links 21 to bringthe dog 2O out of engagement with the teeth 12 of the shank 11. The other hand of the operator adjusts the jaw 10 with'respect to the jaw' 4. vWhen' an object is received between the jaws pressure on the lever is released and the object is turned by the swinging of Vthe handle, 1. When an object is to be released rom between the jaws, the lever is again operated to swing the dog out of engagement withthe teeth 12. The spring 15 atv all times causes the'proper canting-o'the shank 11 toarrange the jaw 10 at the desired inclination-with respect to the jaw el. The spring 28, which at all times exerts a `pres-V sure against the lever causes thelatter to eX- ert a pressure against the links 21 and consequently` retain the dog 2() in engagement with the teeth 12 regardless of the angular arrangement of the link 11 with respect to the shank 14 or the stationary jaw Ll.
Having described the invention, I claim In a wrench, a handle having an extension providingk a shank which terminates in a head, a pivoted spring influenced jaw on the outer end of the head, a dog journaled on the shank inward of the head at one of the edges thereof, an arched spring secured to the said edge opposite the dog, a yoke-like housing surrounding the shank and enclosing the dog and spring', spaced ears extending from Vthe side edges of the shank at the inner end of the housing, links pivotally secured to the sides of the dog, a handle member pivoted betwee one pair of the ears and pivotally connected to the links, a housingi'orgthe outer end of the lever including spaced plates projecting from the shank, spring means between the shank and lever forcing the latter inA one directioma movable jaw having an angle toothed shank received through'the housing, engaged by the first .mentioned spring and having its teeth engaged by the dog, and a lug on the inner end of the shank in the pathof contactwith the end of the housing.` s Y In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
