HANS ADOLF MARTINIUS PEDERSEN, OF KALDNAES, NEAR T6NSBERG, NORWAY.
APPARATUS FOR HEATING AIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 24, 1922.
Application filed December 22, 1919. Serial No. 346,595.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HANS ADOLF MAR- TINIUS PEDERSEN, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Kaldnaes, near Tonsberg, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Apparatus for Heating Air; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for heating air which can be used for several purposes such as the drying of wooden materials and substances of various kinds and also for central heating plants. The apparatus comprises essentlally a container for the air having therein a series of pipes through which products of combustion from a hearth or fire compartment pass, the products of combustion being discharged through a chimney. The products of combustion pass from said pipes into a compartment and are thereafter caused to circulate under the air container before passing into the chimney.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a vertical longitudinal section of a preferred arrangement of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line IVTV of Fig. 2.
The fire compartment 1 is arranged at a suitable distance from the chimney 2, the lower part of which forms a compartment 3. provided with a horizontal partition f, which does not extend quite forward to the outer wall of the compartment, but forms a vertical channel 5 for the combustion gases, which are conducted from the hearth through a series of parallel pipes (3, 7, 3, 9. These pipes are surrounded by a container 10, serving to enclose the hot air. Beneath the container a vertical partition 11 is arranged, said wall extending in the longitudinal direction of the container in such a manner that at each side of this partition channels are formed, serving to conduct the combustion gases, so as to cause them to flow in a bowshaped path beneath the container 10, the passageways 12 and 13 being connected at their foremost end by a cross channel 15. Air may be pumped into the container 10 preferably by means of a fan 16, wherebv the air within the said container is caused to obtain an overpressure. This fan may also in case serve to provide an increased draught in the fire compartment. The con tamer is provided with outlet pipes 17, 18 for the hot air. The pipes may be provided with valves. i
The fuel is supplied from the hopper 19 by means of a worm 20 which may be driven with an adjustable velocity in order to pro portionate the supply in accordance with the different sorts of fuel.
The hot gaseous products of combustion pass from the combustion chamber 1 through the pipes 6, '7, 8 and 9 as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. Arriving at the compartment 3 these gases are deflected downwardly by the horizontal plate 4t through the vertical channel 5 as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 2. They then pass backwards through the passageway 12 adjacent the partition wall 11 beneath the container 10. Thence they pass around the end of the wall 11 as indicated by the arrows in F ig. 2 and forwardly through the passageway 13 adjacent the partition wall and finally escape outwardly beneath the plate 4 into the flue 2 as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2 and the arrow in Fig. 4.
The present arrangement is intended especially for the production of hot air for drying wooden materials, but obviously it may also be utilized for other purposes. in which hot air is wanted. for instance for the drying of other substances and for producing hot air to be used in central heating plants.
Claims:
1. Appara t-us for l'ieating air comprising a fire con'lpartmcut, a chimney. an air container, a Series of pipes in said container through which the products of combustion, from the compartment pass, a chamber near the bottom of the chimney means whereby the products of combustion pass from said pipes into said chamber, and means whereby the products of combustion are caused to pass underneath the air container before reaching the chimney.
2. Apparatus for heating air comprising a fire compartment, a chimney, an air con tainer, a series of pipes in said container,
said pipes for the air heated thereby, a chamber underneath the air container and a partition in the latter chamber whereby the products of combustion from the fire compartment after traversing the pipes describe a bow shaped path beneath the air container before reaching the chimney.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
' HANS ADOLF MARTINIUS PEDERSEN.
