KILN.
Application filed May 1d, 1953 This invention relates to kilns, and contemplates :1 novel construction and arrangement of parts wherein hot air is conveyed from a suitable heater into the kiln and 5 equally distributed along the bottom or floor thereo't under the commodity to be dried.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the tollowing detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part or" this ap plication, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal horizontal sectional view through the kiln.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 01 Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure Figure 4. is a sectional view taken on line ll of Figure 2.
The kiln forming the subject matter of the present invention may be constructed from any suitable material, and also vary in size and configuration without departing from the spirit of the invention, but as shown in this specific instance includes opposed side walls 10, end walls 11, top 12, bottom 13, and a floor or partition 14 which divides the kiln into upper and lower compartments 15 and 16 respectively. The upper compartment 15 is adapted to receive the commodity to be dried, a stack of lumber being indicated at 17 in Figure 2, although various commodities can be arranged in this compartment tor the purpose specified.
Arranged in the lower compartment 16 is a plurality of heat conveying ducts or pipes, through the instrumentality of which hot air -from a suitable heater is carried into the kiln and equally distributed beneath the commodities 17 supported upon the floor or partition 14. The heater is indicated generally at 18 and has associated therewith a suitable smoke stack 19. Surrounding this heater is a casing 20 which defines a hot air chamber 21 having cold air inlets indicated at 22. Leading from this heater and communicating with the chamber 21 are pipes or ducts 23, there being preferably two of such pipes which enter the kiln as shown in Figure 1. It will be noted upon inspec- Serial No. 30,325.
tion (it this figure, that the heater 18 is arranged centrally ot the kiln, and that the pipes 23 are of angular formation and extend in o iiposite directions longitudinally of the kiln, the long branch of each of said pipes being indicated at Associated with each of th" pipes at a point adjacent their communication with. the heater is a damper of any suitable character, the operating rod for which indicated at 25.
Supported by the long branch 2:1- of each ot the pipes above referred to, is a series 01" spaced transversely disposed pipes 26, each of which comn'iunicates with said long branch. through the instrumentality of a short v icaliy disposed pipe 27, this eommunication being controlled by a suitable damper the operating rod for which is indicated at 28. lisingr from each transverse pipe 26 is a plurality of discharge nipples or tubes 29, each of which is covered by a dome shaped plate 30, so that the heat emitted from the pipe 26 is equally distributed under the floor or partition let upon which the commodities are supported. It might here be stated that the particular construction and relative arrangement of the various pi pes may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. Rising from the top of the kiln is a plurality 0t vent tubes 30 :tor the escape of moisture as will be readily understood. ll lanitestly, the heater is arranged extedorly of the kiln, and the heat and the cold air as it enters the chamber 2.1 is heated before it is conveyed into the kiln through the arrangement of the pipes shown and described, it being understood that any number of such pipes may be employed and the arrangement varied as desired.
While i1 is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages oi. the invention will be readily understood, I desire to have it known that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
What is claimed is:--
1. A kiln including a partition dividing the latter into upper and lower compartments, a heater arranged exteriorly of the kiln and including a hot air chamber, pipes leading from said chamber into the kiln, valves controlling communication between said chamber and pipes, and a plurality of Ell) heat distributing pipes supported by and communicating with the first mentioned pipes. V
2. A kiln including a partition dividing the latter into upper and lower compart ments, a heater arranged exteriorly of the kiln and having a hot air chamber, pipes leading from said chamber into said kiln and arranged longitudinally thereof, valves controlling communication between the pipes and said chamber, a spaced transversely disposed pipe arranged in the lower compartment and communicating With and supported by the first mentioned pipe, Valves controlling communication between the respective pipes and means carried by the transverse pipe for equally distributing the heat alon the bottom of said partition for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
