WILHELM ARNEMANN, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,027', dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed October 9, 1891. Serial No. 408,228. (No model.)
To all whom it' may concern:
Be it known I, VILHELM ARNEMANN, of the city of Hamburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitching-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an arrangement which will completely do away with an exhauster for drawing the smoke out of the barrels being pitched, and is an improvement upon the machine shown, described, and claimed in United States Patents Nos. 440,296 and M0297, granted to me on the 11th day of November 1890.
A. practical embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a pitching-machine with my improvement embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. t5 is a side view of the same, partially in section, showing the pipe for conveying the smoke away from the smoke-chamber, leading to an independent furnace, where it may be utilized as fuel.
The furnace employed for furnishing heat to the pitching apparatus consists of a lower compartment A and upper compartment A. A tube d for conveying fresh air from any suitable blower enters the bottom of the furnace. Tubes d a extend from the tube uy into the top of the lower compartment A. Tubes B extend from the upper compartment A in a downward direction for a distance and then turn outwardly and upwardly, and are provided with spraying-nozzles i), which are adapted to enter the barrel to be treated through the bung-hole. A chamber C sui rounds the outwardly and upwardly turned portion of each of the tubes I3. The said ehamberhas aturned-up open portion c, upon which the barrel D is adapted to seat and close said opening. Branch pipes c lead from the chamber C to the main pipe c2, and thence to a chimney, furnace, sewer, or other well-known means for utilizing or conveying` the smoke away. The products of combustion,in passing from the upper compartment A through the tubes B into the barrel to be pitched, heatthe air in the chamber C,thereby rarefying it and thereby inducing a draft, which will draw the smoke out of the barrel D into the chamber C, and thence through slanting downwardly .and outwardly, and at its lower end is provided with an opening c3, through which any pitch which may escape from the barrel may pass to any suitable receptacle I?.
In Fig. 3 I have sh-own the main pipe c2, leading to a furnace, whereby the smoke may be consumed.
By the above arrangement of a chamber around a portion of the hot-air tubes B,I am enabled to draw all the smoke and gases out of the barrel and carry them away without the aid of an exhauster, thereby simplifying the machine in a material degree.
l. In a pitching-machine, the combination, with a furnace,of a hot-air tube leading therefrom and provided with a nozzle, a chamber surrounding a portion of said tube, the said chamber being provided with a suitable outlet-pipe, substantially as set forth.
2. vIn a pitching-machine, the combination, with the furnace, hotair tube, and nozzle, of a chamber embracing a portion of the hot-air tube, a branch pipe leading from the chamber, and a main pipe leading to a suitable outlet, said furnace having an opening leading therefrom into the main pipe for accelerating the draft, substantially as set forth.
In a pitching-machine, the combination, with a furnace, of a hot-air tube leading therefrom and provided with a nozzle for insertion into the vessel to be pitched, a chamber embracing the said tube and provided with an open seat upon which the said vessel is adapted to restand close said opening,a main pipe leading to a suitable outlet, and a branch pipe connecting said chamber wit-h the main pipe, substantially as set forth.
