To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MUNHoLLoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to kilns, particularly adapted for burning or drying brick, but capable of use on other articles if desired. The object of the invention is to provide improved means for distributing the heat in a kiln of the downdraft type, a characteristic feature of the structure being the use of vertical fiues arranged in the kiln, and adapted to conduct the gases from a lower compartment, below the floor, to an upper compartment, these compartments being separated by a floor on which the bricks or other articles are supported, this floor having openings through which the gases pass downwardly, so that there is a continuous circulation downwardly through the floor and upwardly through the flues. Means are provided for inducing the upward flow through the circulation flues.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a kiln constructed according to the invention.

In the drawings, the kiln is shown of the circular type, having an outer wall 6, a floor 7, and a closed crown 8. The floor 7 has many passages through the same, and divides the chamber intoupper and lower compartments, the former of which receives the The fireplaces 9 are arranged at intervals or spaced around the wall 6, and the number thereof will depend upon the size of the kiln or other conditions. A flue 9 leads from each fireplace, on the inner side of the wall 6, and conducts the gases to the upper part of the chamber, through which they flow downwardly, and thence through the openings in the floor 7 to the space under the floor, from which space an outlet flue 11 leads to the stack 12. The mouth of this flue 11 is preferably located at the center of the kiln, and the flue has a damper 18.

These circulation flues are preferably located in alternation with the flues 9 and at equal distances apart,-so asto cause a uniform distribution of heat. An updraft is induced in these circulation flues by means of jet nozzles l7, directed upwardly therein, and connected by pipes 16, which extend through the Wall 6, to a pipe 11 extending around a kiln and to which air or steam may be supplied from a main 15. When compressed air or steam is discharged from the nozzles, it creates an upfiow therein, and by these means part of the gases which flowed downwardly through the floor into the space below are returned to the top of the kiln. Thereby a. continuous circulation is provided, the hot gases passing through the bricks or other material repeatedly, before they are drawn off to the stack, the central connection of the flue 11, at the lowest point of the kiln, taking only the colder gases which settle in the bottom of the space below the floor. The invention is not limited to the particular form and arrangement of the parts shown, but various modifications may e made within the scope of the following claims:
I'claim:
1. A kiln comprising a chamber'having a perforated floor with a space thereunder, a plurality of fireplaces spaced around the chamber and discharging hot gases into the upper part thereof, an outlet from the space under the floor, and a plurality of circulating flues arranged around the chamber in alternation with the fireplaces and connecting said space and the upper part of the chamber.
2. A kiln comprising a chamber having a perforated floor with a space thereunder,
fireplace discharging hot gases into the upper part of the chamber, an outlet from the space under the floor, and circulation fiues connecting said space and the upper part, of the chamber and jet nozzles directed upwardly in said fines and adapted to induce a circulation upwardly of gases from said space to the upper part of the chamber.
3. A kiln comprising a circular chamber having upper and lower compartments and a central out-let from the latter, a plurality of. fireplaces arranged in the outer wall of the chamber and discharging into the upper compartment, a perforated floor between said compartments, a plurality of circulation flues arranged beside the outer wall in alternation with the fireplaces and connecting the lower to the upper compartment, and geans to cause an updraft in said circulation ues.
4. A kiln comprising a chamber having upper and lower compartments, and a perforated floor between the same, means to supply hot gases to the upper compartment, an outlet from the lower compartment, circulation fiues connecting the upper and lower compartments, and means to produce an updraft through said flues, to return gases from the lower to the upper compartment, said means comprising a fluid pressure pipe having jet nozzles directed upwardly in said flues.
