IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED STOVE-PIPE SHELVES AND DRUMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,454, dated July 1, 1873; application filed March 25, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS BLADON, of Oak Harbor, in the county of Ottawa and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stove- Pipe Shelves and Drums; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device as arranged for use upon a stove. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of its upper end with the cover removed.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The objects of my invention are to enable a larger proportion of the heat escaping from a cooking-stove to be utilized, to furnish a convenient means for sustaining small cooking-utensils, and for keeping their contents warm, and to enable the odors of cooking food to be carried into the exit-flue of the stove; to which end it consists principally in the means employed for causing the odors of or from the cooking food to pass into the exitflue, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown. It consists, further, in the combined stove-pipe shelf, heating-drum, and ventilator as a whole, when its several parts are constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose shown.

In the annexed drawing, A represents the exterior casing or wall of the drum, having a conical form, and inclosed at its larger upper end by means of a cover, B. Within the interior of the cone A is placed a second cone, 0, which has a considerable less size than the former, is open at its ends, and is attached to the same by means of three or more wings, D, which extend radially between said parts, and secure said cone (J in position equidistant from the sides and ends of said outer cone.

Passing through the center of the cover B is a pipe, E, which extends downward and terminates about midway between the upper and lower ends of the inner cone.- A short pipe or collar, F, is attached to the lower end of the outer cone, and in connection with said upper pipe furnishes a means whereby the device may be connected with and caused to form a part of the stove-pipe. A butter fly damper, G, pivoted within the lower end of the inner cone 0, completes this portion of the device, the upper end of which forms a convenient shelf for the reception of small cooking-utensils, while the heat of the escaping gaseous products of combustion is imparted to said utensils and their contents in the following manner:

When the damper G is opened the escaping gases pass directly through the lower end of the inner cone, and into and through the pipe E 5 but when said damper is closed said gases are compelled to flow outward around the exterior of said inner cone, upward over its upper end, and thence downward to and into the lower end of said pipe E, having during such passage given off a large percentage of their heat to the outer cone and its cover.

In order that the odors from the cooking food may be caused to pass into the exit-flue, a number of openings, h, are formed in and through the upper end of the front side of the cone A, and, when desired, are inclosed by means of a sliding damper, H.

A hood or ledge, I, secured to or upon said cone immediately above said openings, and

from thence extending forward and slightly downward, in'a measure prevents the current of air from passing upward, and directs it into the same.

For convenience, the hood I may be made detachable, and removed when desired.

The device is now complete, and furnishes a simple, cheap, and useful addition to a cooking-stove, by means of which the capacity and convenience of the latter are materially increased.
