L W.'HEMP. AIR TIGHT HEATING STOVE. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5, 1908.
Patented Aprrl3, 1909.
y 15 Q I 2&1? w M 7 Y lewd? UNITED STATES FATENT LEWIS W. HEMP, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
AIB TIGHT HEATING-STGVE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 18, 1909.
Application filed March 5, rats. Serial in. 419,251.
St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain,
new and useful Improvements in Air-Tight .lleating-Stcvcs, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and enact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates generally to air tight heating stoves, and more particularly to a fuel opening cover for tight heaters, and which. cover is provided with urn, damper, and viding simple me ans for introducing and con trolling the necessary draft to the interior of air tight heating stoves.
One of the principal objects tion is to so construct air tight heating stoves as that a variety of sizes thereof may be nested when packed for shipment, thereby effecting a material s ring in freight charges and crating.
To the above purposes, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter iore fully set forth, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an air tight heating stove of my improved construction, with the upper portion thereof in vertical section; Fig. is a plan view of one end of the stove seen in 1, and showing the fuel opening cover and the damper thereon; nig. 3 is a perspective view of a series of stoves nested for transportation.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings :-1 designates the body of my improved stove, which is preferably con structed of in horizontal section, and being with suitable legs 2.
3 designates the top of the stove, which is detachably positioned on the body 1, and formed on or fixed to said top 3, djacent one end, is a collar i, which receives the stove pipe; and formed in the opposite end of the top 3 is a circular opening 5, through which fuel is introduced to the interior of the stove; and arranged around said opening is a vertically disposed flange or collar 6.
7 designates the circular cover for the fuel opening, which is provided with 3. depending i flange 8, which fits snugly within the collar 6. i,
a combination down (lrart tube, thus pro- I of my invensheet metal, approximately oval provided Fixed to the center of the cover 7, and de- Hnnr, a
pending therefrom is a draft tube 9, open at both ends; and fixed on top of the cover 7, immediately over the upper end of this draft tube, is a convex plate 16, provided with a plurality of draft inlet openings 11.
Arranged for rotation on the plate 10 is a convex draft plate 12, in which is formed a plurality of draft inlet openings 13, which are adapted to coincide with the openings 1 1;
and seated in this plate 12, and projecting outwardly therefrom, is a pin it, which performs the function of a handle for the movable draft plate.
Fixed to the center of the plate 10, and passing through an opening in the center of the plate 12 is a vertically disposed pin or rod 15, on the upper end of i *hich is fitted an urn 16, or like ornamental object.
When the cover is in position and the stove is in use, and it is desired to open the draft to the interior of the stove-the plate 12 is rotated by means of the pin 14 until the openings 13 in the draft plate 12 coincide with the openings 11 in the plate 10, and the draft of air now passes through said coinciding openings, and from thence passes downward through the draft tube 9.
The cover 7 is readily positioned on the collar 6, or removed. therefrom, and said cover conveniently carries the draft tube, damper, and urn, thus compactly assembling sever-Ll necessary and ornamental parts of the stove.
The stove tops 3 are made removable in order that the number of stoves of different sizes may be nested for transportation, as shown in Fig. 3 and Where such arrangement is carried out, the legs, draft tubes, and urns for the entire series of nested stoves are packed on the interior of the innermost stove body. This arrangment saves much space and consequent freight and packing charges; and when the stoves are unpacked, they can be easily and quickly set up for use by unskilled labor, and without the requirement of special tools.
I claim 1-- The herein described heating stove, comprising a sheet metal body, a removable sheet metal top therefor, in which top is formed a fuel opening, a vertically disposed collar integral with the top around said opening, a sheet metal cover adapted to fit on the collar to close the fuel opening, which cover is provided with a depending flange,
radially arranged vex plate, a pin fixed in the center of the perforated plate and passing through the center of the draft plate, and an urn fixed to the pin above the perforated draft plate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence, Of two subscribing Witnesses.
