PORTABLE FURNACE.
ESPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,800, dated June 23, J 885.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAM H. H. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Summer Stoves; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cooking-stoves of that class known to the art as portable furnaces; and it has for its object the provision of an article of the class named adapted for use during the summer months, or at times when it is desirable to employ a light quick fire, for cooking or for other purposes, and equally desirable that the temperature of the room be maintained at the lowest possible point.
The invention co ntemplates,particularly,the provision of a portable furnace or summer stove preferably divided into two compart ments, each having an opening at its top to receive cooking utensils, one of said compartme'nts forming the combustion-chamber, and in means whereby the products of combustion may be caused to pass either directly from said combustion-chamber to the smoke-exit without passing through the remaining compartment or through said remaining compartment and thence to the smoke-exit.
To the accomplishment of the above the invention consists in theconstruction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a portable furnace or summer stove constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isabottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3is a longitudinal vertical section 011 the line we of Fig. 1, showing a direct passage for the products of combustion from the combustionchamber to the smoke-exit. Fig. 4 is a similar section on same line of Fig. 1, showing an indirect passage for the product-s of combustion from the combustion chamber to the smoke eXit. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the stove on the line 1 l of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is asimilarsection on theline 2 2 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is an end elevation of myimproved summer stove.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, A designates a portable furnace consisting in sides a, ends a a, bottom a, and top a, prefferably formed of sheet metal. The sides a and ends a a I preferably incline outwardly from bottom to top, as thereby a neat and tasty appearance is imparted to the stove.
A designatesacircular disk secured to the bottom a of the furnace A, at the middle thereof. G designates the smoke exit opening through said bottom (Wand disk A. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that the smoke-exit G is located at the middle of the bottom of the furnace A. Iattach importance to this feature in the construction of said furnace, as thereby the said furnace may be used in connection with ranges or stoves of any and all descriptions, from the flat square-topped cooking-stove to the ordinary cylinder-stoves in use in parlors, offices, 850. y
c designates lugs projecting downward from each side of the smoke'e'xit O, to insure the alignment of the smokeexit of the portable furnace with the openings of a stationary stove or range below.
The shell or case A is divided by a fixed trans verse partition, B, into two compartments, B B, one of which, B, forms the combustion chamber. The partition B extends from the bottom a to within a short distance of the top a the products of combustion passing from the combustion-chamber B over said partition to the smoke-exit 0, located at or near the middle of the bottom a 1) designates a fixed transverse partition located a short distance from the end wall of the compartment B. The partition D extends from the top a to within a short distance of the bottom a and forms in connection wit-h the end wall a. an air-flue, D',through which air is conducted from an opening, (I, located near the top of the end a, to the floor of the combusti0n-chamber B.
d designates a valve or damper hinged at one end to the end wall a, at one end of the opening (Z therein. The opposite end of the valve is held at any desired point by a strap, (2 secured to the end a of the shell A. The purpose of said valve (2 is to regulate and con trol the quantity of air passing through the opening (I to the combustion-chamber B.
E designates a partition fixed to the top a and extending downward within the compartment B to a point below the top of the partition B. The partition E abuts at each end against the side walls, a, of the shell, and forms a deflector against which the products of combustion strike after passing the partition B, and by which said products of combustion are deflected downward, for a purpose hereinafter described.
F designates ahorizontal movable partition placed and operating upon brackets f, attached to the side walls,a, of the furnace within the compartment B The partition F is provided at one end with an upwardly-projecting portion, F, that alternately comes into contact with one or the other of the partitions B or E.
F designates a rod attached at one end to the horizontal partition F, and thence projecting through the end wall a", whereby to oper ate said partition in longitudinal direction.
G designates an opening formed through one of the side walls, a, of the shell and normally closed by a flap, g, hinged to said side wall upon the outside thereof. The purpose of said opening is to provide means for examining the progress of the combustion of fuel within the combustion-chamber when utensils are in position upon the top of the stove.
H designates openings formed through the top a over each of the compartments B B for the reception of cooking utensils.
By reference to Fig. 8 it will be observed that the horizontal partition F is drawn outward, its upwardlyextending portion F bearing against the partition E, whereby direct passage of the products of combustion is insured from the upper edge of the wall B to the smoke-exit 0, located at the middle of the bottom a. By reference to Fig. 4 it will be observed that the said partition F is moved inwardly, and its end F into juxtaposition with the partition B, whereby the products of combustion are caused to pass over said end F, along the upper surface of the partition F, around its outer end, and thence backward along the lower surface of said partition F to the smoke-exit O. The direction taken by the products of combustion in each of the cases above described is indicated by arrows in the figures named.
I attach importance to the horizontal partition F, and its adaptation as herein described to a portable furnace, as by its use one or both of the compartments B B may receive heat from the combustion-chamber.
In Fig. 1 I have shown one of the utensilopenings, 4, as closed by a rectangular cover, 0. I have found by practice that this form of cover gives better satisfaction than the ordinary round cover for many reasons.
The operation of my improvement will be readily understood without further explana tion, it being borne in mind that said improvement is designed for use in connection with a stationary stove or range.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a portable furnace or summer stove, a fixed transverse partition extending across the stove at the middle and from the bottom nearly to the top thereof, in combination with a sliding horizonal partition having an upwardly-projecting portion, a fixed partition located a short distance from and projecting downward from the top of the stove to apoint a short distance below the upper edge of said fixed transverse partition, smoke-exit arranged at the bottom of the stove, and airinlets communicating with the combustionchamber, substantially as described.
2. In a portable furnace or summer stove, the combination of the following-harried elements, to wit: side walls, at, end walls, a a", top a, bottom a, fixed transverse partitions B, D, and E, sliding partition F, smoke-exit G, air-inlet flue D, openings (1, and utensilrcceiving openings H in the top a all arranged, combined, and operating substantially as described.
3. A portable furnace or summer stove having an inclosing-shell of rectangular form, a combustion-chamber, an air-fiue to said combustion-chamber, a smoke-exit situated at the middle of the bottom of the inclosingshell, and a plate or disk of greater width than the bottom of the furnace secured to said bottom surrounding the smoke-exit and projecting at each side of said bottom, substantially as described.
