Description

LLLLLLLLL H.
' APPLIC 6,1921- 1,404,349, Patented Jan. 24, 1922,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS F. DESPRES, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
LAMP WRENCH.
To (all whom it may concern v Be it known that I,LOUIS F. Dnsrlms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county ofGrafton and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches and particularly to a wrench for use in connec- {gion with lamps or headlights of automoiles.
An object of the invention is to provide a wrench of this character wherein the lens supporting frame of the headlightmay be readily applied and removed.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which readily unfastens the lens supporting frame without the assistance of any other tool;
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character capable of embracing the lens supporting frame, for the purpose of removal Without causing damage or marring the frame in any way.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character consisting of a single length of material adapted to embrace the lens supporting frame of the headlight and wherein the end portions of the members are arranged to be connected for the purpose of binding the number on the frame. 7
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompany ing; drawings in which igure 1 is a front elevation of a headlight showing the invention applied,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the wrench,
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Figure 1,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the position of one of the stop finers.
a Referring to the drawings 5 designates a body member or jaw constructed of resilient material substantially rectangular in cross sections and may be made in any length desired. The=end portions 6 and 7 of the jaw are extended toward each other so as to form the jaw member into a band. The inner sur- Speciiication of Letters Patent. face of the band is provided with antishpplng material 9, such as rubber which may be secured to the band in any desired manner. Projectingfrom one edge of the jaw at'spaced intervals and inwardly of the band formed by the jaw is a plurality of stop fingers 8 which limit lateral movement of the jaw member when the same is being applied. The inner face of each of the stop fingers is provided witha lining similar'to the antislipping material 9 of the band so as to prevent marring of the object with which the wrench is engaged.
The end portion 6 0f the jaw member is slightly enlarged and provided with an opening 10, one portion of theopening be ing substantially flattened as at 11 and of a length corresponding to the width of the end portion 7 of the jaw. The end portion 7 of the jaw is slightly reduced and provided with a handle 13, said handle and end portion being arranged to extend through the opening 10 of the end portion 9, the end portion 7 being then extended back from the portion 11 of the end portion 6 so as to bind the jaw in engagement with the lens supporting frame A of a headlight. The binding engagement of the jaw with the frame can be regulated according to the distance the end portion 7 passes beyond the end portion 6.
It is of course obvious that when the handle 13 is moved after being passed through the opening 10, that the lens supporting frame will also respond in view of the binding engagement of the jaw therewith. When it is desired to disengage the wrench from. the frame A, it is not necessary to disengage the end 7 from the end 6, but simply relieve the binding engagement of the jaw 011 the frame by releasing the handle 13, whereupon the entire jaw may be moved laterally of the frame and thereby disengaged.
The fingers 8 serve to limit the movement of the band laterally of the frame A so that there is no danger of the wrench slipping off the framewhen being applied, or when in use.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of wrench capable of bein used in connection with all cylindrical mem ers such as the lens frame of headli hts, jar covers, or the like, wherein it is necessary to rotate these members in order that they may be removed or applied. Another important feature of the .de ice is that no adjustment is necessary in order to accommodate the aW-member-to the size of the Work, and very little physical strength is necessary in order to lo'osenthe firmly secured lens supporting trame and the operation 1s accomplished Without.
' scratching the frame or distortingthe same in any manner.
