PATENT OFFICE. I

. snavrnecur. I I
To all whom it 47211.12) concern: I I I Be it known that I, Josnr'n R. -A1ihnm, a citizen ot' the United States, and a. resident of Grand Rapids, inthe county of Kent and State ofh lichiganfliave invented certain newand useful Improvements in Shaving Cups, of tion. II II I "The object of my invention is 1;;0' provide a simpleand convenient folding 'or collapsible, combined shaving cup and brush.
The device is so constructed that the detach able cover of the cup forms the handle for the shaving brush. The "brush and cup are so constructed and arrangedthat when the brush is detached from the cup and the sections of the cup are collapsed the brush may be dipped into the lower section of the cup in order that the bristles may dip into the water held in the lower section whereas, after the cup has been used the sections are extended and held there so. that the brush is held away from the bottom of the cup.
In the drawing forming part of this application Figure 1 is an elevation of a shaving cup embodying my invention, showing it in condition for carrying in a bag or kit.'
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the parts in the same position as in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional View showing the cup in use and Figure 1 is a plan view of the cup with the cover removed.
The cup includes a bottom section 1 for holding water or soap and it consists of the bottom 2 and the cylindrical wall 3 extending upwardly therefrom. The section 1 has a bottom flange 4 provided with an internal thread 5 and there is a detachable annular member or ring 6 which is screwed into the threaded flange it and which projects at 7 laterally beyond the section 1. The receptacle also includes a telescoping member 8 of cylindrical shape which is adapted to slide up and down over the bottom section 1. In its lowermost position the section 8 is adapted to rest on the projecting portion 7 of the detachable ring 6, as is shown in F igure 3; and I have provided means for holding it in extended orraised position. Preferably, there are projections or beads 9 extending outwardly from the top of the section 1 and these move in vertical grooves 10 in the upper portion 8; At the lower which the follow-ingis a specifica= sp'ciflcatin of Lettelsletent ,Patented Jan. 24,1922. portion o'f the section 8 these grooves turn at right angles to form turnouts 11 for the projections The cover 12 for the receptacle tormsthe The cover preferably handle for the brush. has .a top 13 shaped to provide a convenient grip and it'has a flange 14 adaptedto abut against the top edge of the section 8. The cover also has a reduced portion provided with the external thread 15 which engages the int-ernalthread 16 in the top section 8. The cover may include a body of rubber 17 or other bristle holding material and the bristles 18 are set in this material'so that they hang down within the cup when the cover is in place.
In Figures 1 and 2 the device is shown in condition for packing or carrying in the bag or kit. The section 8 has been raised in relation to the section 1 and also turned so that the projections 9 engage in the groove turnouts l1, and in this position the projections hold the sections from telescoping by keeping them in their extended position. The cover 12 is screwed into the upper section 8 so that it forms a closure for the top of the cup and the bristles are held up out of contact with the bottom of the cup and if there is a cake of soap in the lower section 1 the bristles will be held away from this also. In this condition the bristles are not compressed or bent out of shape and they may dry out in their proper condition.
l Vhen the device is to be used the cover 12 is unscrewed from the section 8 and the brush is thus released for use. The section 8 is also turned in relation to the lower section 1 and when the projections 9 come into line with the vertical portions 10 of the grooves the section 8 will drop or it may be moved down until it rests upon the pro ecting portion 7 of the ring 6. The overall height of the cup has been reduced to about one half and the brush will reach down into the lower section and there reach any water which is placed therein. After the device has been used it is closed and returned to the condition shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The section 8 may be removed at any time by unscrewing the ring 6 and sliding the section 8 downwardly over the lower section 1 until it disengages therefrom. The ring forms a convenient means for maintaining the cup in assembled condition.
The device is simple, convenient and sanitary.
Having described my invention what I claim is:
l. A combined shaving cup and brush comprising a telescopin cup consisting of a cylindrical liquid an tom section, a cylindrical upper section adapted to Slide in telescoping vrelation downwardly over said bottom section, means for holding said sections in extended relation, and a'ren ovable cover for saidupper cup section, provided with bristles to form a brush of which said cover forms the V handle, said brush being held away from the soap holding botdrical upper cup section adapted to slide in telescoping relation downwardly over said ,bottomisection and adapted to be retained on the latter by said projecting member,
' projections'on said lower cup section, said upper cup section having grooves to receive said projections, said grooves comprising vertical portionsand lateral portions or off- I sets, a cover having a screw threaded connection with the top of said upper cup section and provided'withbristles to form a brush of which said cover forms the handle, said brush being held away from the bottom of said lower cup section when said projectio'ns, engage in the ofi set'portions of said groo'ves, and adaptedto project into said lower cup section wlieiisaid upper cup sectionis loweredover said lower cup section. V Signed'atthe 'oityof Stl Paul, county of Ramsey and'State of Minnesota, this 28th day'fof February, 1919. o
