PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR ROBERT RYAN, OF CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA.
DOOR DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pdtentgd JguL 24, 1922.
Application filed March 30, 1921. Serial No. 456,896.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that LARTHUR ROBERT RYAN, a subjectof the King of Great Britain, and resident of the cit of Calgary, in the Province of Alberta, lgominion rofl Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a door device, and the objects ot the invention are to provide a device which will open and close Adouble 0r single doors atthe same time, also holding doors apart when open, thus preventing the doors from blowing closed.
Other objects are to provide a means whereby the mechanism to lock the door can be easily operated, and further objects are toprovide a device that is simple in construction and not liable to go out of repair, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required ot' them.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a door embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of a pair of double doors designed t-o open outwardly and embodying my improved device.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the car.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the door lintel with the rail and improved device connected thereto.
'e Figure 5 is a cross section taken on the line 4 4 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a plan view of a pair of double doors adapted to open inwar ly and provided with the improved locking means.
Like characters of reference refer to like Y parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a pair of double doors, and B the door lintel, and C indicates the ceiling of the car..
An iron track 10 is carried by the underside of the door lintel B, and extends parallel to the ceiling and is supported at the outer end with an adjustable strap iron brace 11 carried by the ceiling.
A car D is designed. to run on the track 10 and consists essentially of two plates 12 and 13 connected by pins 14 carrying rollers 15 designed to engage the side faces of the rail 10.
The top plate 12 is provided with two 4projections 16, the purpose ot which will be made clear hereafter.
The car D also carries on either side of the rail 10,the upwardly turned end of two iron bars 17 and 18 extending angularly and connected to projecting lugs 19 and 20 carried by the top part of the doors A.
The rail 10 is provided at one end adjacent the door lintel B with a clamp 21 pivotally carrying a latch member 22 having a notch 23 therein designed to engage one of the projections 16 on the car D when the same is moved in proximity tothe said latch.
The outer end of the tracklO adjacent the brace 11 is also provided'with a clamp 24 carrying a latch member 25 and notch 26 also designed to engage one of the projections 16 provided on the top plate 12 of the car D.
Each of the latches 22 and 25 are provided on the top face thereof with a ring 27 through which a rope or wire 28 passes.
The rope or wire 28 is fastened at one end to the adjustable brace 11 and extending parallel to the rail 10 through the rings 27 engages an eye 29 carried by the door lintel B and extends downwardly and has its extremity provided with a handle 3() by the handling of which the latches 22 and 25 may be worked.
When in use and if the doors are closed as shown in Figure 4, the latch 25 will be in engagement with the prfgection 16 on top of the plate 12 of the car and should it be desired to open the doors A, the rope 28 is pulled downwardly so as to disengage the latch 25 from the projection 16 when the doors will open, on slight pressure being applied against them.
As soon as the car D travelling on the rail 10 passes under the latch 22, the hold on the rope 28 is released and the latch 22 will be lowered and thus caused to engage the second projection 16 on top of the car thereby locking the doors in open position.
It will be seen that the device can be adapted to double swinging doors, when the car and latches 18 and 17 will take the position shown in Figure 2 in dotted lines. lVhereas they will adopt the position shown lin dotted lines in Figure 7 when they fare swung inwardly. e
The device 1s herewith shown connected to a barndoor, but it will be understood vthat the same can be suitably worked in connee tion with any door and even with a single door.
The clamping` members 2l and 2l may be slidably mounted on the rail and provided on the underside with a thumb screw 31 by means of which it can be fastened in position on I'the rail. It will be seen by this means the doors can he opened to the desired 'degree and locked in that position,
lVhen-the doors are adapted to swing outwardly and inwardly, the lugs 19 and 2O are made to extend higher than the ldoor so as to allow the same lfree passage under the rods l? and'lS when the doors are open inwardly as shown in dotted lines in Figure 7.
As Vmany changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently Widely dierent embodiments of my invention, within lthe scope of :the claims', constructed Vwithout departing from the spirit orscope thereof, it is intended that-all mat'- ter contained .in the Yaccompanying specifi- 'cation and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Vhat I clalm as my invention 1s:-
l. door locking device comprising in combination with a door, a rail having one end :fastened Yto 4the door Il intel, a bracey supporting the opposite end of the rail, a car in slidable engagement with the rail and comprising a top plate, a lower plate, pinsA holding the plates above andV beneaththe rail, rollers on the pins designed to engage the rail, a rod onthe doorhaving one end brace,l an eye on the door lintel designed to engage the downwardly extending endnofthe wire, and a hand grip on the end of the wire. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR ROBERT- RYAN.
