UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETHAN I. DODDS, OF CENTRAL VALLEY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, OF lPITTSBUR-GH, PENNSYLVANIA.
, STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Specification of Letters latent. Patented J an. 17, 1922.
Application filed February 16, 1921. Serial No. 445,465.
I '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN 1. Bonus, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Central Valley, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stay- Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in staybolt construction the object being to provide improved and universal connection between the bolt and the outer sheet of the boiler and it consists in the details of con struction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in section through the outer sheet and bearing for the bolt; Figure 2 is a similar view at right angles to Figure 1; Figure 3 is a view in plan, half of the cap being broken away and Figure 1 is a view similar to Figure 1 of a modified form.
5 represents the outer sheet of the boiler having a tapering opening therein for the reception of the bridge 6 the ends of which are inclined or tapered to conform to the taper of the bolt opening and of a size to snugly fit within said opening but free to be turned with the bolt while screwing the inner ends of the latter to the inner sheet (not shown), This bridge is provided at the upper edge of its ends with the tongues 7 which latter are adapted to rest on the upper surface of the sheet 5, and assist in supporting the bridge.
8 is the stay bolt provided at its outer end with an eye 9 through which the bridge passes, the lower face of the upper bar or wall 10 of the eye 9 of the bolt being rounded so as to rovide for a rolling bearing of the bolt on t e bridge, and as the top surface of the bridge is straight the bolt will be free to move in the direction of the long axis of the latter.
11 is a cap which in the present instance is shown integral and cup shaped to cover and conceal the end of the bolt and close the opening through which the latter passes. This cap is provided at diametrically opposite points with slots 12 to receive the tongues 7 of the bridge 6, and is permanently secured to the outer sheet by the weld 13 which latter also permanently secures the bridge 6 to the outer sheet and also to the cap.
By providing the bolt opening with tapering hole for the bolt, and with a bridge having similarly tapered ends and of a length to engage the walls of the bolt open ing, it will be seen that the stresses are partly borne by the bridge and not solely by the tongues, the latter operating primarily as a means for permanently securing, by the weld 13, the bridge to the outer sheet and also to the cap.
In Figure 4 I have provided the bridge with a semispherical recess to receive the ball or sphere 14 upon which the top bar or wall 10 of the eye 9 of the bolt rests, the said bar or wall being similarly recessed to receive the sphere, sufficient space however being left between said bar or wall and the bridge for the free rocking movement of the bolt. Vith this latter construction the bolt is of course prevented by its engagement with the sphere from sliding or moving in the direction of the long axis of the bridge but is free to rock in all directions. In other respects the construction is identical with that shown in Figure 1.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described but,
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a staybolt structure, the combination of the outer sheet of a boiler having a tapering opening for a bolt, a bolt having an eye, a bridge passing through said eye and having tapering ends adapted to engage the tapering wall of the opening and a cover embracing the opening and welded to the outer sheet.
2. In a staybolt structure, the combination of the outer sheet of a boiler having a tapering opening for a bolt, a bolt having an eye at its outer end, a bridge passing through said eye and having tapering or inclined ends engaging the tapering wall of the bolt opening and also provided at its ends with tongues resting on the outer face of the sheet and a permanently closed cover embracing the said opening and recessed to receive said tongues, the cover being Welded to the outer sheet and tongues.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing Witness.
ETHAN I. DODDS.
