ETHAN I. DODDS, OF CENTRAL VALLEY, NEVI YORK, ASSIGNOR TO FLANNERY BOLT COMPANY, 033 PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
STAY-BOLT STRUCTURE.
Application filed February 16, 1921.
T0 aZZ w 710m it may concern Be it known that I, ETHAN I. Donns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Central Valley, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in $tay- Bolt Structures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in staybolt construction the object being to simplify and cheapen the construction of a universal mounting for a bolt, and it consists in the parts and combination of parts as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of one embodiment of my invention; Figure 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Figure 1 and Figures 3 and 4 are views similar to Figure 1 of modifications.
5 represents the outer sheet of a boiler provided with a bolt opening 6 which may be of any shape and which may be the opening from which the threaded sleeve of the Tate flexible bolt has been removed, and 7 is a bridge rectangular in cross section spanning said opening with its ends resting on the outer face of sheet 5. This bridge is provided, preferably on its upper face with a semi-spherical recess adapted to receive the hardened ball or sphere 9 which rests snugly therein but free to turn therein.
10 is the bolt provided. at its upper and flattened end with an eye 11, the upper wall or cross bar of which is provided with a semi-spherical recess adapted to engage the ball 9 and rest on and be supported by the latter in a plane above the top surface of the bridge 7, so that the bolt 1.0 will be free to swing or vibrate on the sphere without contacting with the bridge, thus leaving the bolt free to move or swing in the direction of the long axis of the bridge, and also free to swing a limited distance at right angles to the said long axis, the eye through the bolt being sutficiently wide to permit of such limited sidewise movement, thus providing for the universal movement of the bolt on its support.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1922.
Serial No. 445,464.
12 is a cap covering the bridge and outer end of the bolt and provided at opposite points with slots 13 to receive the ends of the bridge 7 and support and sustain the latter against movement, the cap 12 and bridge 7 being permanently secured together and to the outer sheet by a weld as at 1 x. With this construction the bridge becomes permanently united to the cap and the outer sheet, and the cap permanently united to the outer sheet.
The construction shown in Figure 3 is identical with that shown in Figure 1 except that I employ a sleeve 15 and screw cap 16 therefor, the sleeve being united to the bridge and to the outer sheet as in the pre vious construction. With the construction shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 the bolt opening is permanently closed whereas in Figure 3 the screw cap 16 may be removed at any time for the inspection of the bolt.
In the construction shown in Figure 4 I have dispensed with. the sphere 9 of the prior construction and provided the bridge with a semi-spherical projection 9 adapted to engage the concave seat in the top wall of the eye of the bolt. WVith these constructions the bridge is properly entered in the eye of the bolt and the latter turned to screw it into the inner sheet (not shown) or forced into a hole in the inner sheet and upset in the well known manner. After the bolt has been thus applied and secured the cap or sleeve as the case may be is placed in position over the bridge and the parts welded to permanently unite them.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In stay bolt construction, the combination of an outer sheet having a bolt opening through the same, a bridge mounted at its ends on the sheet, a bolt having an eye to receive the bridge, and cover means recessed to receive the ends of the bridge and resting on the outer face of the sheet the said means and bridge being welded to the sheet.
2. In stay bolt construction, the combination of an outer sheet having a bolt opening, a bolt having an eye, a bridge spanning the opening and passing through said eye the bridge having a projecting spherical bearing on which the top wall of the eye of the bolt rests and means embracing the top of the bolt and having open recesses to receivethe ends of the bridge the said embracing means and bridge being welded to the outer sheet.
In a stay bolt construction, the combination of a boiler sheet having a bolt openbridge and outer end of the bolt and recessed to receive the ends of the bridge the cap and ends of the bridge being Welded to the outer face of the sheet.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of a subscribing Witness. 1
