Application filed March 5, 1928.
T aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that 1, DAVID (J. Eecnn'r, citizen of the United States, residing at Kennett, in the county of Dunklin and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gauges and has for its object the provision of a device adapt ed for use by carpenters in marking window jambs so as to indicate the exact points at which holes should be bored for forming the pulley openings.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is adjustable whereby it may be used for marking the holes to be bored for the accommodation of pulleys, regardless oi? whether wide or narrow sashes are to be used, the construct on being such that when the parts are adjust ed and the device is subsequently given a slight blow with a hammer, the proper marks will be made upon the window j amb.
An additional object is the provision of a. device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly officient in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and a dvantages in view, the invention consists i. the details of construction to be hereinaitcr more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a sectional view through a portion of a window jamb showing my device associated therewith and in contracted position,
Figure 2 is a side elevation,
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view showing the adjustable members moved outwardly to their maximum degree,
Figure 4 is a. plan view,
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the movable members, and
Figure 6 is a detail plan view of the movable members removed.
Referrin more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a window jamb which it is desired to mark for the boring of the holes in forming the pulley openings. Tn carrying out my invention 1 provide a body 10 which may be formed as a casting and this body is rectangular in form and provided centrally of its top with a projee tion 11 and longitudinally and centrally of Specification of Letters Patent.
VI] I Patented J an. it 1922. Serial No. 363,388.
its bottom with rib 12. This rib is adapted to be inserted within a transverse recess B in the jamb A. The body 10 has formed therein spaced parallel cylindrical holes 13 and is provided in its top with a pair of threaded holes 14: leading into the holes 13.
Associated with each side of the body 10 is a plate 15 which has its lower edge formed to provide a plurality of penetrating prongs or tines l6 and it will be observed that these plates 15 are of the same length as the body 10 and of such height or width with respect thereto that the prongs or tines 16 will extend beyond the adjacent face of the body. The plates 15 each carry cylindrical studs 17 and 18, the former being longer than the latter and the studs on. one plate are ar ranged the reverse of those on the other plate, that is the long and short studs are in alternation. These studs 17 and 18 extend into the holes 13 and are engaged by set screws 19 threaded into the holes 1%.
In the use of the device, the body is so placed that the rib 12 thereon will be disposed within the groove B provided for the reception oi the parting strip. The set screws 19 are loosened and the plates 15 are moved away from or toward the sides 01" the body a suiiicient degree so that the distance between the plates will be the distance between the centers of the pulleys, and this of course depends entirely upon the thickness of the sash. The device being thus positioned and the plates 15 being thus adjusted and the set screws 19 tightened, the operator strikes a light blow with a hammer or other implenett, upon the extension or projection 11 whereupon the penetrating prongs or tines 16 will be driven into the j amb and will indicate the centers of holes to be bored by a brace and bit in forming the pulley receiving slots. The device is then of course removed JTODI the window jamb and it will be found that each plate or rather the penetrating prongs thereon has left four indentations in the face of the jamb and when holes oi? proper diameter are bored with these points their centers the pulley receiving slots will be formed.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drmvings it will be apparent that I ha ve thus provided a very simply constructed and easily set and operated device whereby the necessary markings for pulley slots may be quickly, easily, and accurately made, the device thereby being a great labor saver besides improving the quality of the work by making it accurate.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A device otthe character described comprising a rectangular body having formed upon its underside a longitudinally extending central rib adapted for engagement within the parting strip receiving groove of a window jamb, said body being provided upon its upper side with an impact receiving projection, said body being further vprovided with spaced parallel holes extending entirely therethrough from side to side, a plate disposed at each side of the body and having one edge formed with a plurality of spaced penetrating points, studs carried by said plates and slidably engaged within said holes whereby the position of said plates may be varied with respect to their distance from the sides of the body, and screws threaded into the body and engaging said studs for holding said plates in adjusted positions.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
DAVID GARILE EGBERT.
