UNITED-- STATES GERD I-IOBBISIEFKEN, F BURLINGTON,-IOWA.
nnvicn'ron USE IN APPLYING LocKs 'ro nooas, ETC. 9
application filed March 25, 1926. Serial 110 97349. 9
plate being shown in dotted lines) The invention has relation to akdevice for facilitating the work of carpenters and others in applying mortise locks to doors and in applying the keepers of said locks to the door jambs, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts as set'forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention the numerals 1, 1 designate two similar members of a right angle device formed from a rectangular thin sheet of metal having a right angle bend 5 therein midway of its length. The device is preferably mounted at the upper end of a standard or supporting stick 2 at the proper I height, said standard having an adjustable foot 3 having a set screw 4: to fix the adjustment, in order that the height may be varied for doors of difierent sizes.
The device being applied to the door as shown in Figures 2 and 2 of the drawings, with member 1 parallel to the side of the door, said member is given a tap with the hammer to cause inward extending point projections 1' thereof to be driven slightly into the side of the door to mark the location of the door knob and of the key hole, the
' door being then, following removal of the device, bored at the points thus indicated for the door knob spindle and for the key hole.
Before the device is removed member 1 is given a tap with the hammer to cause point projections 6 thereof, of which there is a vertical series, to be driven slightly into the free edge portion of the door to mark the location for the mortiseof the lock, the door being bored for mortising along such marking.
In marking the door jamb for the keeper plate, the device is applied to the door after the lock has been applied thereto as in Figures 3 and 3 of the drawings, and the door closed, the closing of the door causing point projections 7 of aright angle free-edge flange 8 of the member l to be driven slightly into the wood of thedoor jamb, so thatwhen the door is opened, the devicemay be applied to the' door jamb by matching up the point projections 7 with the markings made thereby as in Figure 4, and the openings 9 in the member 1 or in its duplicate 1, used as a guide for the pencil to mark upon the door jamb the location and size .of the open,- ings to be made for bolt of the door, i. e: the lockbolt thereof, and the latch bolt. The reason that the device is applied to the door in this case, is because it is necesary to engage the upper ofthe openings 9 with the latch bolt, so that when the door i's clos'ed, the device will be accurately positioned upon the oo ia bj,
he e b n du i ate m m ers 1, a d duplicate flanges 8, 8, and all other parts being in duplicate, the device is useful in applying locks and keeper plates to both right and left hand doors andv the jambs thereof.
Figure 5 of the drawings shows a modification wherein a standard 2 is provided at its upper end with a device formed from a rectanguar thin sheet of metal having a right'angle bend 5 midway of its length thereby forming two similar members 10, matching up with the members 1, 1 and upon which the members 1, 1 are adapted to be .fremovably mounted or carried bymeans of reversely turned top flanges 11 thereof. No standard 2 is provided in this case.
The flanges 11 are spaced fromthe adjacent sides of the members 1,1 to form grooves into which are adapted to fit closely the upper edges of the members 10, the latter being provided with large rectangular openings 12, matching up with but larger than the individual openings 9 of the members 1, 1, so that each opening 12 surrounds the several openings 9 of each member 1 or 1', whereby, should it be desired to have othermembers 1, 1 having openings 9 of varying size and location for different sizes of doors, this may be provided for by selecting a device having members 1, 1 having openings 9 of the correct size and location and mounting it upon the carrying members 10.
I claim 1. Means for facilitating the application of mortise locks to doors consisting of a right angle device of sheet metal, one memher of which is provided'with point projections to mark theloc'at-ion" oit' the door knob and key hole and the other member of which is provided with point projections toinark the location of the lock, the first named member being also provided with openings to mark the location of thelocking bolt and latch bolt oi the lock upo1rt-l1edoor jamb.
I 2 Means for facilitating the application of mortise locksto' doors, consisting of a right angle deviceot sheet metal, one 'nielnber of which is provided with point projec tions to mark tli'e' loca tiol'i" of the door knob and key hole and the other memberofwhicli is provided with point projectionsto mark the location oi 'the lock, the first named merit her being also provided with openings to mark the location of the locking bolt and latch bolt of the look upon the door janib; and further provided with a free edge'right angle flange provided with point projections;
3. Means for facilitating the application of mortise locks to doors consisting of a right angle device of sheet metal having duplicate members one of which is provided with point projections to mark the location of the door knob and key hole and the other of which is provided with pointprojecti'ons' to mark the location of the lock, each member having openings to mark the location of the looking bolt and latch bolt of the lock upon the door jainb and having a free edge right angle flange provided with point projections.
l. Means for facilitating the application of mortise locks to" doors consisting of a right angle device mounted at the upper end of a's'ta'ndard and having diiplicatememhers, each of which is provided with a com paratively large rectangular opening, and a second removable right angle d-evice' car ried by the first named device andhaving dtiplicat e inen'ibersg'one'of which is provided with point projections toai'larltthe location of the door knob and key hole and theother of which is provide-d with point projections to mark thelocation of the lock,'eac'li meniher having also openings smaller-than and .registeringwith the opening of the first named member tomark the location of the lockingbolt and 'oi' the latclibolt of the lock upon the door j anib and having airee 'etlge right angle flange provided with point proje'ct-ions'."
