Be it known that I, Jnssn D. I-IoYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at` Los `Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State 3 of California, have invented a new and usebeing more particularly a folding bed provided with means for retaining they bed clothes or covers thereon. f

Folding beds in general are provided with some means for holding the clothes 4on'the y `1s 1n` lowered position as shown in dotted bed, such means usually consisting of clamps whereby the clothes are clamped to the mattress and remain so in both positions of the y bed.

The principal object of'my invention is to produce a device of the class described which will coact with the movement .of the bed to hold the clothes in certain positions-in which the -bed may be placed, that is, when the bed is lowered and in use, the clothes are `held at the foot of the bed loose enough so that the movement of the person is not interfered with and so arranged that `when the bed is in folded or closed position that the bed clothes or covers are automatically spaced apart so that each cover is separated from the others thereby permitting afree circulation of air between thecovers when the bed is in such closed or raised position.. Other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter from the following description and drawings. y

The rods 27 extend freely through perforations formed in the angle iron 28 and on each rod 27is a fixed collar 29 engaged by a coiled spring 30on the rod 27,y

extending between such collar 29'V and the angle iron 28, the function of the spring is to elastic-ally or yieldingly hold the rupper end of the rod in engagement with the angle iron .24,as shown in Fig. 2.

Slidably mounted on therods 27 are a made of wood having holes or perforations `38 to receive the rods `27, such hangers 32 are providedk with a series of clamping memT bers, each of kwhich consists of a jaw 34;, the `rounded face of which is beveled to engage a correspondingly beveled rounded recess 35 formed in the bottom or lower edge of the hanger. y Secured to each jaw 34 is a rod 37; which slidably extends upwardly through the hanger being provided at its upper end with a plate or head 38, the hanger being formed with a recess 39 to receive a coiledY Forthe purpose of limiting the relative movement between the hangers, that is, to properly space the same, I provide short, flexible tapes 43 provided with eyes 41- which are arranged to engage headed pins or buttons 42 on the top of the hangers. This device operates in the following inan-V ner:

Fiaclibed cover is attached to one lof the hangers 32 by inserting the lower edge between the jaws 34 and the notch 35, this, it will be understood, may be readily d'one by depressing-the springs 40 so vas to open the jaws. i Ihen the covers are attached, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and the hangers placed upon the rods 27, the rods 27V are depressed against the action kof the springs l and the ends of the rods connected with the angle iron 24, heretofore described.

When the bed is in lowered position shown Y l in dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, the hangers stack upon the rods 27, the covers lie flat upon the mattress. The

mattress is provided with a movable section 45 connectedto the mattress body by means of iexibl'e straps, one of which is indicated at 46, such connections forming hinges for the purposes hereinafter described.

As the bed is raised from the dotted line position'in Fig. 1 to the full line position, the

momentum of the lower end of the bed movingupwardly throws the hangers away from ythemattress on the rods 27, which action is assisted by the section of the mattress which swings upon the hinge in the full line position shown in Fig. 1. The hangers 32 areV spaced apart, that is, prevented from ,piling up by the spacing tapes 43 heretofore described.

The weight of these covers at one end press againstthe section 45 and the saine swings on its hinges into the position shown in Fig. `2 with the covers lying fiat on the mattress. y Y

It will be understood that anyvof the covers may be readily removed from the bedV by disengaiging 'the rods 2"(V at their upper ends from the angle iron 24 and the hangers above the one having the cover tobe removed are ytaken from the rods 27 and suoli hangers and covers are folded back upon thc bed leaving exposed the cover to be removed. In combination with a folding bed, a foot board, upper and lower angle irons eX- tending across saidj foot board each having perforations therein, rods slidable through the perforations in the lower iron, fixed collars on each rod, coiled springs on each rod between the collar thereon and the lower iron, a plurality of hangers slidably mounted on said irons each consisting of a board having perforations toV receive the rods, means on .each hanger for attaching the bed covers thereto, and means for limiting the relative movement between said hangers.

means on each hanger for attaching the bed covers thereto, said means consisting of a series of jaws formed to lit into recesses formed in said hangers, a rod on each jaw slidably mounted in said hanger and means for yieldingly holding said jaws in engagement with their respective recesses.

5. In combination with a folding bed, a series of rods mounted on the outer end of the bed, and a plurality of hangers slidaloly mounted on said rods, each hanger consisting of a flat board having a series of recesses formed in its lower face, a jaw in each recess, a rod on each jaw slidahly mounted in the hanger, a head on each rod, and a coiled spring on each rod engaging said head to yieldingly hold the jaw in engagement with its associated recess.

6. In combination with a folding bed, a series of rods mounted on the outer end of the hed, a series of hangers slidably mounted on said rods, means on each hanger for engaging the bed covers, a mattress on said bed, and a movable section on said mattress hinged to the mattress arranged to engage the lowermost cover to swing the covers away from the mattress when the bed is swung into closed position.
