To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, WILLIAM MEARs and HENRY DAvIEs, of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Globe Chimney- Supporter, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a vertical section of our improved chimneysupporter as applied to center-lamps ou the line o c, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a side view ot the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a wedge clamp-supporter, also applied to center-lamp. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same as applied to side lamps. Fig. 5 is a vertical section, and Fig. 6 atop view of the wedge-clamp of the same.

The object of our invention is to construct a device by which the globes of side and center lamps' of railway passenger-cars may be easily changed without disturbing the lamps, for the purpose of cleaning the same or substituting new ones without delay. The invention consists of a cylindrical tube connected by brackets to the sides or top of the car, which tube incloses the sliding metallic chimney resting on the globe, and allows the same to be set to any desired position by means of wedge or spring clamp arrangement.

In the drawing, A represents the glass globe of a center or side lamp of a passenger-car, which has tightly fitted to its rim the metallic chimney B, which connects in the case of the former lamp with a somewhat larger aperture, C, in the roof or top of the car, so as to extend through it when lifted ott', the globe also to serve as outlet for the gases of combustion. The globe chimney slides inside of a guide-tube, D, of suitable material, which is connected to the top or side of the car by means of suitable brackets E. Wedge or spring clamps operating on chimney B regulate the position of the same in guide-tube D. The wedge-clamp, Figs. 3 to 6, is constructed by providing suitable recesses in brackets E for the admission of a wedgepiece, f, which inclines under an angle of forty-five degrees toward the chimney, and acts on it through a corresponding opening in guide-tube D by means of head-screw F. A

metallic piece, e, is curved to iit tightly on the chimney, and supplied with T-shaped projections and side pins to prevent an upward and forward change of position when the chimney is taken out. It is kplaced into the bracket-recess and pressed by means of wedge-piecef and head-screw F against chimney B, clamping thereby the same firmly at any position desired. rlhumb-screw F of top center-lamps inclines downward under an angle of fortyiive degrees, enabling thereby the easy handling and adjustment from below. A reflector, G, incases the top brackets E and the clamps, presenting a neat outward appearance. Thumb-screw F of side lamps is placed under the same angle toward the chimney above the bracket E, and acts, by means ot' Wedge-pieces f, (curved to iit the chimney and recessed to admit the screw F,) on chimney B. Pins g, applied through the sides of bracket E to the upper part oi' wedge f, secure the position of the same and prevent the detaching from the bracket.

The spring-clamp device is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and consists of two vertical slots, a, at the upper part of tube D, in connection with a slot, b, inclining toward them under an angle of forty-tive degrees, forming a triangular segment. Slots a must be of sufficient width to allow free play of the segment when clamped against chimney B by thumb-screw F. A projection, d, of the segment, serves as rest for screw F moving in a female screw of bracket E, and transmits the clamp pressure on chimney B, sustaining it in any position till the globe is changed, cleaned, and replaced. The chimney B rests iirmly on globe A without breaking or disconnecting from the same. The annoyance occasioned by the breaking 0f the globes and smoking ot' the lamps may, therefore, in a great measure be avoided.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The guide-tube, bracket, and wedge-clamp combined with the chimney B, as and for the purpose described. l
