SALES-SLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentamt 27, Ljl.
Application filed March 3, 1921. Serali'o. 449,282.
to provide a Sales slip which is primarilyY designed to facilitate the tabulation upon an adding machine of the prices of articlesV which have been purchased and llisted on the slip. It is customaryfin retail stores, particularly grocery stores and thelike to write out upon a slip alist of the articles purchased by a customer, together with the price of each article, and to mentally add,
up the total cost of the purchases. Tt is inconvenient to make this calculation on an adding machine since when the slips are inserted in an adding machine and moved` between the rollers to a point where the name of the article purchased is visible and the machine operated to print the pricey of such articles upon the slip, the price will appear on one edge of the slip vat a considerable distance below the space in which the name of the article is written adjacent the other edge of the slip.
An Vobject of this invention, therefore,is to overcome this diiiiculty by providing` a slip having spaces so arranged thereon that an adding machine may be conveniently used to tabulate the price of the articles purchased, and the price of each article will appear in the same space as the name of the article.
It is customary for storekeepers to make duplicates of sales slips and to use them as' a basis for their bookkeeping, and the advantages to be derived by providing a slip,
which may be used in an adding machineV pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a face view of my improved sales slip; and
Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating a slightly modified form of slip. Y
Referring in detail to F ig. l of the drawings, A represents my improved sales slip, which may have displayed thereon adjacent its upper edge, the name of the particular firm using the slip, as indicated at 5. The main body portion of the slip is provided with a plurality of parallel staggered lines 6. These lines adjacent the left hand edge of the slip are parallel to the upper and lower` edges thereof and decline sharply.
from left to right at their intermediate portions, as indicated at Adjacent ftheir right handV ends, the Alines again extend in parallelism with the upper and lower edges of the slip. The right hand end of each line is preferably in thesame horizontal plane as the left hand end of the line below it.
This arrangement of lines provides a plurality of staggered spaces extending across the slip. Upon the left hand end of the upperline 6, the caption Account Forwarded may be displayed and upon the left hand ends of the three lowest lines 6, the captions Paid on Account, Balance Due and Proof may be respectively displayed. The left hand ends of the spaces provide convenient places for writing the names and' prices of the articles purchased, as indicated at 8.
In use, after the names of the articles` purchasedV have been written upon the slip and-also the pricesofsuch articles, the slip is inserted between the rollers of an adding machine and when the caption Account Forwarded becomes visible, the machine is operated to print the amount forwarded,`
as indicated at 9, adjacent the right hand edge of the slip. Due to the staggered formation of the upper-line 6, this amount will appear on the same line as the caption. In like mannen the printed prices of the articles purchased will appear at 10 upon the same, line as the names and written prices of the articles. The amounts may be quickly totaled upon Vthe machine and the total printed upon the slip, as indicated at 11,. The amount paid on accountis indicated in its proper space. By mental subtraction,
chine andthese last two `sums added on the machine to prove the account.
the amount due maybe struck oif the ma- Y ln Fig. 2, I have illustrated a slight modification, wherein a slip 8 is provided which also has a plurality oi"- parallel staggered lines l5 thereon. rlfhese lines extend across the slip in parallelism with the upper and lower edges thereotI With the exception of an upwardly offset portion such as 16 in the intermediate portion of each line. This forni of slip serves the same purpose as the slip A, but in this instance, the penciled price of the article purchased appears at 17 on the offset portion of the lines 16, serving as a guide to one taloulating` the price of the articles purchased upon an adding machine.
ln this form of slip, the initials P. A., standing for Paid on Account, the initials B. D., desionating` Balance-Hue, the imi-,iai r., for tremor mi a@ mains a. F. for Account Forwarded. are displayed on the offset portions oit the lines upon which these amounts are to be printed.
The numeral 17 and the initials serve as a guide when the slip is introduced into an adding machine in the same manner that the indicia 8 and the captions on the slip A, serve as a guide When this slip is introduced into a machine.
Various slight changes and alterations might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without ychines being provided with departing from the invention and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details set forth7 but shall consider myselie at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
l claim.
l. A sales slip ruled to provide a plurality of parallel staggered lines, each of said lines including an offset portion Where on the price or an article is listed and another portion Whereon the price of said article is copied by a machine.
2. A sales slip for use in tabulating machines, said slip being provided with designated spaces in Which the price of articles are listed by hand, and being provided with designated spaces oset from and associated With said first-mentioned spaces wherein the price or" said articles Ais printed by a machine. Y
3. A sales slip for use in tabulating madesignated spaces Within which data to be copied is list-ed and having designated spaces associatedvvith the first mentioned spaces Wherein a copy o said data is made, said secondmentioned spaces being oil'set from said rst-mentioned spaces.
