DEVICE FOR CLOSNG THE TAP-HOLES EN SMELTNG-LFURNAGES.
Application filed September T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, FRIEDRICH HAAR- rifiNN residing,` at Essen, `Germany, a citizen c oi the German Republic, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Devices tor Closing the rlap-l-loles 1n Smelting- Furnaces, (for which l have filed application in Germany, Sept. 6, 1918,),035 which the tollowing is a specication.
This invention relates to a device for closing the tap hole in smelting furnaces by means off a pivotally mounted arm, which carries a plug, and which arm is so moved, that the plug is only plunged toward the end oi" its closing movement into the metal issuing)- from the tap hole of the furnace.
The ooj ect oi" the invention is to provide a. device of this kind which shall be as simple as possible and work reliably.
rlhe invention will he further described with reference to the Vaccompanying drawing which shows a side elevation of a construction of the device diagrammatically according to the invention.
In the wall A. of the furnace is arranged the tap hole al, which establishes connection hetwen the smelting chamber a2 and the discharge chute L31 To the external surface oit the furnace or iframe a4 is fixed a bearing device a5, to which a crank arm or link B is pivotally connected by means of a pin a, in the bearing device t5 is also mounted a shaft C, which carries a crank arn'i C1 rigidly connected thereto. The two crank arms B and C1 are pivotally connected at their ends remote from the bearing device a5 by pins 711 and 02 to a coupling member D so form# rlhe coupling neemher ing a quadrilatei'al. D has an extension D1 pointing toward the tap hole al ot the turn-ace to the tree end of which is ixed a spike Z2 on which is mounted `the plug not shown in the drawing. The
shaft C carries finallyl an arm c3 to which a handle E is pivoted, and also another arm c4' to which is attached a counterweight F.
lfVhen the tap hole is open, the parts assume the position shown by dot and dash line in the drawing in which theyare held by the counterweight F. Tfi/'hen the tap hole is to be closed, the plug, which is composed of clay or the like, is placed on the spike Z2 and then the entire device swung downward by pulling down the handle E. In its de- Epecicaton of Letters l'atent.
