END-GATE LOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented Dee. 13, 1921.V
Application filed April-15, 1921. Serial No. 461,592.
To aZZ 'whom t may concem Be it known that I, MATHIAS F. BOHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stickney, in the county of Aurora, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in locks and particularly tolocks for wagon end gates.` V
One object of the invention is to provide a lock or latch for an end gate which is used in connection with the type of gate which is formed in two hinged sections, one of which carries a bifurcated member extending transversely of the other section, and in which bifurcation the lock is received, means being carried by the lock for releasable engagement with the bifurcated member to prevent accidental displacement of the lock.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from thel following descriptionwhen taken in' connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of an end gate-V showing the invention applied thereto and in operative position.
F ig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view through the looking device and portion of the end gate. w
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing there is shown an end gate which includes the two Sections 10 and 11, hinged'together at 12, the section 10 having thereon the member 13 which extends longitudinally of the outer face of the section 11. The free end of this member 13 is formed with a bifurcation 111, and secured'tov the outer faceof said end, and extending around the bifurcation, is a flat metal wear plate 15.
In one portion of the plate 15, at one side of the bifurcation, and also in the port-ion of the member V13, therebeneath, is an opening 16.
Disposed through the section `11, is a bolt 17, and mounted on the outer end of the bolt is a transverse head 18 in the form of a channel. On the inner end of the bolt, at the other side of the section, is a nut 19'. Disposed within the channeled head is the in'- ner angular portion 20 of the handle 21, a pivot pin 22 being disposed through the portron 20 and the Side mus of the head. on
in the drawing. Between the bottom wall I of the ,channeled head and the inner face of the member 20, is disposed a le'af spring 24 which normally eXerts pressure to urge the nose into the opening 16. Thus, when the head is disposed transversely of the bifur- .w
cation, and rests on the wear plate 15, with the nose 23 properly seated in the opening 16, the bolt, which carries these parts, cannot be accidentally rotated. TWhen, however, it is desired to remove the gate, the operator presses the handle inwardly toward the gate, which rocks the Inember'20 on its pivot and releases the nose 23 from the opening 16, thus permitting the rotation of the head into a position longitudinally of the bifurcation. The bifurcated member can then be moved, together withthe section 10 of thegate, outwardly, so that the gate maybe readily removed from the wagon.V
When the gate has been 'properly placed between the cleats of the wagon, and the head 18 disposed through the bifurcation, the operator presses the handle .inwardly so that the nose 23 will escape the end of the member 13, and beplaced on the outer face of the wear plate 15. Upon rotating the head, by means of the handle, into a position transversely of the bifurcation, the spring 24 will cause the rocking of the member 20 and snapping of the nose 23 into the opening 16.
lNhat is claimed is: t w The combination with a wagon'end gate having a pair of hinged Sections and one of them having a bifurcated member extending longitudinally on the outer face of the other section, and a wear plate on the bifurcatedl member adjacent'the bifurcation, of a bolt vrotatably supported in the said other section and having'a-transverse channeled head for movement through the bifurcation, and a spring pressed handle mounted pivotally in the head and having a nose for engagement disposed transversely of the bifurcation.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses. o 1 o MATHIAS F. BOHR.
