Description

H. HV.ITR0XEL.
WASHING MACHINE. APPLlcAnoN man 1'AN.7.1921.
1,399,451 Patented Dec. 6, 1921;.
"L il rotated in` onel direction `only (commonly prove the washing tala;
To all 'whom t may concern; I
`Beit known that l, l-lanvnr H; llnoxnn a citizen of the United States," residing at Ashland, in the county oit Ashland and State ci tibio, have invented certain new and useful `linprovements in l/Vashing-ltlacbines, ot which the following is a `speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in washing machines, and `more particularly to that class or type ot' power `washers in which a rotary'cylinder is employed.
ln this class ortype oi machines there is a great tendency ott the clothes when in the rotary washer cylinder to `assume a ropy` knotted condi.tion, thistendency being particularly `manifest where Athe `cylinder is known as a onefwayi cylinder), and the primary object of my invention is, thereiiore, to eliminate this tendency in such washer cylinders and at the same time im-` or cleansing properties A further object is the provision ot a generally improved clothes separating and inn tercepting element which may be readily inserted in or removed trom rotary washer cylinders ot the general classes indicated, and when inserted will divide and maintain the clothes within the cylinder in batches and not only entirely eliminate any tendency ot the clothes to assume a ropy or knotted condition but improve the washing or cleansing properties ci the cylinder'.
lJlith the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination oit parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one ot its embodiments in the accompanying drawings and particularly pointed'out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, forming a part ot this speciiication, lignre l is a view of an ordinary rot-ary washer cylinder detached and equipped with my improved clothes intercepting and separating element or device, the door being removed.
Fig. 2, a similar view ot the same, a portion ot the side walls ot the cylinder being removed to show the central portion oit the clothes intercepting and separating element.
Fig. 3, a sectional view of the same taken on line 3-3 ot Fig. 2, the improved washer being equipped. with two batches ot clothes i Specification of Letters Patent.

Application tiled January 7, 1921. tSerial No. 435,553.
to illustrate the relative arrangement and co-action of the parts. i
Fig. d, anenlarged fragmentary view oit the improved intercepting and separating element detached, and illustrating in particular the interposed pervious `flexible ima? terial or tabric carried by the trame portion thereof. Y
5, anedge viewot the clothes intercepting and separating element detached, and illustratingin particular the relatively flat" central clothes intercepting fabric por* tion 'as suspended horizontally trom the trame. y .Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.` l
i rlhe rotary washer cylinder l, may be ot any suitable and convenient form, and so likewise as to the general interior arrangement and manner ot driving or operating the same.
For the purposeot illustration only, lj
have shown my improved device mounted in a cylinder having concave-convex` shaped heads la, and provided with axial stub shafts or trunnions 1b.
`is a convenient means ot removably inserting and securing the improved clothes intercepting and separating` element within the cylinder and between the heads la, the improved device is preferably provided with a trame 2, corresponding in outline and general dimensions to the general form and outline ot the largest interior dimensions oi the cylinder. The iframe 2, therefore, comprises the transversely extending members 2, and the curved end members 2a, the latter being preferably ot resilient or spring material so 'that the end members 2a, may be contracted somewhat in forcing the trame into the cylinder and between the heads la, by inserting the same through the door p0rtion 1, or clothes receiving opening normally closed by the segmental lid or cover 1b. the supporting trame is provided with suitable oraminous or pervious material, preferably loosely mounted within the trame as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. rlthe clothes intercepting and separating material or fabric is preferably loosely and flexibly mounted within the frame, and may be formed of any suitable and convenient material having the innetions mentioned, such material in the present instance, comprising cross chain members 2", having their intersecting portions connected to each other and connected at their ends by means of hoolrv members 2, extending through openings 2d, in the frame. The frame 2 is preferably formed of a single lengthof Wire or round bar material and united'or Welded at its ends to forma continuous piece.
In order to permit the separated batches of clothes 3, to move toward and from each Y other and 'toward and from the center of the cylinder, 'as illustratedl for example in Fig.
cf the drawings, the pervious or foraminous material such as the chain members 2b, is preferably so arranged and connectedv Y that When the frame 1S moved to a horizonments of my invention', Without havin@ attempted to set forth ally the forms in willich it may be made, or all the modes of its use, what Ivclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
l. In aV Washer, a rotary Washer cylinder provided With a transversely extending axially located pervious flexible partition adapted to separate the clothes into batches and to move to and fro With the latter during the rotation of the cylinder.
2. ln a rotary cylinder Washer, a clothes separating partition comprising a flexible supporting frame corresponding` in form to the internal dimensions of the cylinder, and a relative movable fabric body comprising a relatively flat central clothes intercepting body portion and inclined marginal portions.
3. ln a Washing machine, 'the combinationv with the rotary Washer cylinder, of a frame removably mounted therein transversely of the direction of rotation, and clothes intercepting and separating foraminous material loosely carried by said frame and adapted to swing from one side to the other With the separated clothes as the cylinder is rotated.
Ll. ln a Washing machine, including a rotary Washer cylinder including bilged heads, a resilient contractible frame corresponding in form and dimensions to the largest internal dimensions of said cylinder and heads and insertible from the perimeter of said cylinder, and clothes separating pervious material flexibly carried within said frame and separating said cylinder intor clothes Washing compartments, said pervious material swinging to and fro as the cylinder is rotated.
in testimony whereof l have alixed my signature.
