WASHING MACHINE.
Application filed October 3, 1925. Serial No. 60,295.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is rectanguio lar in cross section and which has the inner faces of its sidewalls formed to provide rubbing surfaces together with means carried by the ends of the device for supporting the same,A for rotary movement.
"Another object of the `invention is to pro- .f vide a device of this kind comprising a receptacle having its walls preferablyv formed of wood together with means coacting `with such walls to provide a strong and rigid structure and wherein" the liability ofy the side walls bulging outwardly is substantially eliminated. e
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of this kind comprising a receptacle having its ends provided with out standing stub shafts together with supporting bearings eoacting with said shafts which are adapted to be fitted upon the upper edge portions of the walls of a stationary tub or the like. I y
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind comprising a receptacle together with means coacting with either end of the receptacle for rotating the same.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved washing machine whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will `be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Y Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectionalview takenthrough a washing machine constructed n accordance with an embodiment of my invention and in applied position;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective of one of the supporting bearings as herein employed; Figure 3 `is a view in perspective of the second bearing member herein disclosed;
F lgure 4 is aviewin end elevationof the receptacle comprised in my improved device unapplied; Y
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substan y tially` on the line 5-5 `of Figure l. As disclosed inthe accompanying draw! ings, my improved machine comprises a receptacle R of desired dimensions and which is preferably square in cross section with the walls thereofpreferably of wood, such as oak, and having their meeting edge portions securely connected, as at l, by nails or other preferred attaching .members The side y wallsof the receptacle R `arefurther main-` tained in assembled relation by the strengthening bands 2 disposed around the receptacle and preferably at the ends thereof and at a point substantially midway of such ends. One ofthe side walls of thereceptacle R `at its central part is provided with a relatively large opening 3 `whereby clothing and kin-l dred articles may be readily applied within or removed fromthe receptacle R, said opening being adapted'to be closed by the closure member 4. The closure member 4 hastits marginal portions defined by the outstanding flanges 5 which, when the member 4 is in applied position overlie and contact with a gasket 6 of suitable yielding material, said gasket being mounted within a rabbet 7 provided in the outer face of said sidewalLand defining the opening 3. Adjacent to Aeach end of the opening 3, suchwall of the receptacle `lit is provided with the outstanding blocks 8, the opposed faces of which being provided with the oppositely directed open slots9 in each of which is` adaptedto be received an end portion of a holding rodl, said rod when applied extending lengthwise over the closure member 4.` t
1 To `further increase the eiiciency of this -holding rod 10, I iind itof advantageto `force between the appliedrod `10 and eloi sure member 4 a wedgeplate l1, said plate l1 when applied assuringgthe closure memf `ber 4 seating in a manner to effect a watertight closure.
The inner face of the appliedl closure meniof the other side wall` of the receptacle Rl with thelong'itndinally disposedgroovcs or channels 14 for the saine purpose- Y 'l I Secured to the axial center o each end Wall 15 of the receptacleMR is*acircular metallic plate 16 having at its axial center an outstanding stub shaft or trunnion 1i` the extremity of which being angular in cross section, as at 18,` to permit anoperat-A ber andA of. a-length td fproject"`beyond the sidewalls of thereceptacle It with the lpossible exception"ofthe sidel n'all proiidcd with the ripening B. These-arms lZ1 are bolted,4 at 2251er `otherwise attached to the adjacent end wall 15. u w
*The arins 21.. coacting with oneend `u'all 15` are coinpleinental to the arins 21ffa`ssociatedwith the opposit'elend wall 15 and cach pair of such resultant parallel* arneshave 'isposed through` their extended portions an extreinityot avstrengthening rodl 23 the etrenities of which having engaged therewith the holding nuts 21 contacting with the outer faces of said arnisul. `The intermediate orfcentralportion ofeachof the rods S23 'extends over, and hascontact with an outstanding block25 arranged substantially at the axial center ofthe adjacent liside Walibi" thereceptacle Rand disposed transversely thereon These rods '23 provide effective means whereby thesidel` walls of thc receph tacle are "effectively maintained in assembled relation i and particularly held against bulging outwardly whereby the eiliciency` ot the device is increased `and its liic 1 inaterially prtilonged;"` Y
My washing machine isparticularly de- `signed for use in connection with La` stru tionarytub, especially of the type used in `connectionwith *the smaller honies and as illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, T `denotes i stationary tub of.` andoublextype andflitting upon theupperfedgeof the intermediate or dividing"wall.Qis` a bracket `27, saidvbrackeo being ofvsuch; atype -as to straddle tlieupper ifiortionof said Wallxl `from above. f This" bracketE in cross Lsecti on is substantially Ushaped 'in tomnand, its inl terxnediate or'base `portion :28j is: provided `Witban upstandingI open bearing 290i n which may be readily positioned a second: stub shalt or trunnion-17.` The..`se`cond stub:shaft or trunnion 17 readily received. within an upstanding `bearing 30 l carried by; the intermediate or base "portion 51` of a second bracket i 13.2 also substantially `llfshaped `in cross section and having its'1nner7snle-ineh1- ber 33 continued by the opposite directed elongated arnis 34C having close contact with the inner upper portion of an outer or end Wall 35 of the tub T, the outer extremities ol the arins 23a being providedavith the extensions 321i `resting upon the upper edge surfaces ot' the front and rear wall 36 ot the tub T as is particularly illustrated in Figure of the accompanying drawings. The arms :il are of snella length as to `lit substantially snug between the front and rear walls Ilo so `that when turning movement is being imparted to thc receptacle ll, the hearing l0 is cll'cc` tively held against movement.
Where the tub is ot a single type, two hearing structures similar to that shown "in Figure Q areeinploycd `as by havingvthc outer entreuiities of each of the stub shafts or` trunnions 17 provided with the angular portions 18, thecrank C may be operatively engaged with either endl ol thc receptacle as the requirements ot practice inayneces sitate or prefer. i In practice7V the desired amount of `supediiicd liquid is placed withinthe receptacle `R thronghjthe opening 3 `together Withfthe clothes and the like to be cleansed.` After the closure member `l has been applied, there ceptacle R rotatedresulting in requisite tuinblingol the articles withinthe receptacle to thoroughly clean the saine, such cleaning action being facilitated by the internal ruhhing surfacesprovided by the groovesmor channels 12 andkhl hereinbefore referred toh One of the sidewivalls of the receptacle `adjacent fits-junction with a second sidewall is providedfwith an opening 37 normally closed by the plilg i353. `After the receptacle has been turned for a desired time, the plug 38 will he removed and the Water `permitted to drain out,` `it being understood that fthe side Wall ol the receptacle in `which said opening 37 positioned then being `disposed down Wardly so that such Water will he ieceived Within the tub T and drained olf in the usual way. The receptacle R is then partially rotated to bring said side wall to face uph wardly whereupon additional water maybe .llU
placed within the receptacle throughsaid 1.
opening Si" and particularly through a hose leadingifrorn the `:faucet `Fin either ,of th@ two `tub compartments. The plug 38 is then replaced and the receptacle R again rotated for a desired time. These foperationsfare continued until the Water asit passcsout through the opening 37' isclean or clcarand thus indicating that the articles Withinft-he` receptacle haitebeen effectively cleansed.
lll
As indicated by-lln'olen lines i1rI+`igl11n` o, i
itis to be `notedthat the receptaclel` is of such dimensions .in cross section as to readily rotate Within the-tub` or a compartment `thereof Without coming incontact 1with the `front wall 36 or with .the `faucet F. .i i i `From, theaforegoing ,descriptionoritm is tice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim In combination With a tub having side Walls and front and rear Walls, brackets engaged With the upper portions of said side Walls and provided With bearings, a closed 2G receptacle having a normally closed opening in one of its side walls, outstanding stub shafts carried by the ends of the receptacle e and engageable with thebearings, means engageable with a stub shaft for rotating the receptacle, said receptacle when in applied position extending across the top of the tub and partially extending therein, each of said bearings being substantially U-shaped in form and straddling a side Wallfrom above, and outstanding arms carried by a side member of one of the brackets, said arms being of a length to fit substantially snug between the front and rear Walls of the tub, the outer extremities of the arms being provided with extensions resting upon the upper edge surfaces of the rear and front Walls of the tub. l
