UNITED EDGAR F. SHAW, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SUPPORTS FOR WASH-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,925, dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR F. SHAW, of
a Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Support for Wash-Tubs, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved support in a position ready for use. Fig.2 is a perspective view of the same when folded together. Fig. 3 is a vertical section representing the application of a wash-tub thereto. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and convenient support for wash-tubs, which is capable of being folded into a small compass for transportation or removal to a closet or other place where it may be kept dry, and my invention consists in a series of legs or supports pivoted to a central plate, so constructed as to admit of the spreading or opening of the legs to a position for supporting the tub, and of being readily folded when not required for use, the top of each leg being provided with one or more projections or grooves over or into which the lower rim or chine of the tub is set to hold it firmly in place, by which construction the support may accommodate tubs of various sizes.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out. v
In the said drawings, A A are a series of legs pivoted to the outside of a central plate, B, of the form seen, being hollow within, and provided at each outer corner with a projection, a, the inner surface 5 of which is beveled or inclined so as to form, in connection with the back 6 of the next projection on the right, a stop or rest for the leg A, pivoted between them to the plate B, when the several legs are spread out to their greatest extent. At the upper end of each legis secured a bent plate, 0, of the form seen, provided with two projections, b 0, between which the lower rim or chine of the wash-tub is placed, whereby it may be firmly held, as required, when in use.
It is evident that each bent plate 0 may be provided with more than two projections or with one or more grooves in order that the same support when properly adjusted may accommodate tubs of various diameters. By increasing the length of each leg of the support and attaching a clothes-line, d, thereto, Fig 1, it will answer a good purpose as a clotheshorse or drier, and by slight changesin construction the support may be adapted for other uses to which it may be found applicable.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by means of my invention I am enabled to provide at a small cost a convenient and portable stand or support, which may be readily folded and packed in a small compass when not in use, or when required to be transported from place to place.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within described support, consisting of a series of legs, A, pivoted at their tops to a central plate, B, and provided with grooves or projections b c, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 23d of May, 1873.
EDGAR F. SHAW. In presence of- N. W. STEARNS, W. J. CAMBRIDGE.
