Beit known that l, HENRY MATHIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Virginia, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful improvements in Chain-Repair Tools, of which the following is a specification. n
rlhis invention relates to tools and more particularly to a tool designed to facilitate the repairing of anti-skid chains as used upon motor vehicle wheels.
An object of the invention is to provide a tool by means of which repairs may be made to an anti-skid chain quickly and easily, on the road, or in a garage.- The said tool embodies a pivotal jaw member co-actf ing with a rigid handle carried jaw member each of which carry link spreading points by means of which the connecting link-eyes may be spread, and which also comprise roughened gripping jaws for closing the eyes of the connecting links of the aw.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tool. constructed whereby spread ing or closing of the connecting eyes of chain links is provided by a pivotal hand lever, having a cam thereon arranged to increase the leverage of the pivotal hand lever to make it comparatively easy to spread or close the link eyes.
Otherobjects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the improved tool.
Fig. 2 is a detailed side elevation of the improved tool having one of its side plates removed.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved tool comprises a handle 1, to which side plates 2 and 3 are detachably connected. The side plates 2 and 3 pivotally support a second hand lever 4; upon the inner edge yof the pivoted end of which lever a cam projection 5 is formed. The cam projection 5 engages one edge of the pivotal jaw 6 pivotally connected as shown at 7 to the side plates 2 and 3.
rlhe free end of the jaw 6 projects beyond the side plates 2 and 3 and is offset laterally as shown at 8 in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. rlhe lateral offset end of the jaw 6 has an eye spreading point or head 9 formed thereon to co-act with the eye spreadingL point or head 10 which is formed upon the laterally o'set end 11,0f the handle 1.
is clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the inner Vengaging surfaces of these heads 9 and 10` are fiat and are in parallelism While their outer surfaces are rounded and tapered to' extend into the connecting eyes of links of anti-skid tire chains.
The jaw 6 is urged outwardly from the handle l and against the convex edge of the cam projection 5 by a flat spring 12 which is connected' to the said' plates 2 and'3 by a pin l2. lThe handle 1 is provided with arcuate projections 13 and 14: on its inner edge which engage the flat spring 12 and maintain the spring in proper tensioned position to impart the necessary urging action to the jaw The jaw 6 and the handle or hand lever 1 are provided with roughened surfaces 15 and 16 respectively on their facing edges adjacent their lateral projecting ends, and these roughened places are adapted for engagement with the connecting eyes of the links of a chain for closing the links.
rlhe handle of hand lever l is arcuately curved between its pivotal and free end as shown at 17 to permit the hand gripping portion thereof to extend parallel to and in engagement with the facing edge of the handle or hand lever 1 ywhen the jaw 6 is forced into a closed position by the cam pro jection 5 as shown in solid lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Owing to the curvature of the cani projection 5, the urging action of the spring will force the jaw 6 and hand klever 4 outwardly into an extended or open position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. However, this curve or convex edge of the cam projection is formed so that when the jaws are closed they will be held closed and the handle d must be moved a short distance relatively to the handle 1 to release the jaw 6 for opening action by the spring 12. Relatively long leverage is provided in the tool, which makes it very easy to operate, by the relative lengths of the handle 4, and of the maximum radius of the cam projection 5.
A clip 2O is provided having lateral attaching flanges 21 to permit the clip to be attached to a work bench, and when it is desired to work or operate the improved tool by one hand, the handle 1 is slipped under the Lip-standing U shapedportion 22 of the clip 20 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be Constructed in various other manners, and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, donot desire to be limited inV any manner except as set forth in the claixn hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what l claiin is: n
A tire-chain repair tool Vcomprising a handle having one end laterally offset, a spreading point formed onnand extending laterally inward at right angles to ytheeX- treinity of said laterally offset end `plates spaced apart and fixed to said handle and extending beyond -one edge` thereof, a jaw pivotally` mounted between said plates and having a laterally `offset end, a spreading point on and extending laterally inward at Vright angles tothe extremity of said; lat
erally offset end for coperation with the spreading `pointV onsaid handle; the said points having inner flat sides in closely adinovernent'of the jaw and having at its forward end a rounded 4cam projection opposed to the outer edge of the jaw, and a spring interposed between the handle and the inner `,edge of the jaw and tending to force the jaw outwardly. y i
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HENRY Marnis.
