Application filed January 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD LIPsKA, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Fennimore, in the county of Grant and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates and gate operating mechanism and particularly ,to novel means for opening and closing a gate from a distance in order that the occupant of a vehicle may, by manipulating certain levers, open or close a gate,.barn door or garage door without leaving the vehicle.
A still further object of this invention is to provide means whereby two gates may be operated simultaneously to open or close the same, and this is of particular importance in connection with the protection of travel on rights of way over railway tracks, it being possible by the use of this device to provide gates, one of which is on each side of the track, to be operated by an approaching vehicle prior to entering on the track and providing means whereby the gates may be closed after the vehicle has crossed the track. Such a device would constitute a safeguard to the traveling public and insure care in approaching railway tracks.
A still further object of this invention is to produce gear operating gates or closures with dual means for actuating the gearing in opposite directions in carryingout the purposes hereinbefore stated.
I have in the preceding part of this specification referred to gates and doors and closures synonymously and it is to be understood that in the further description of the invention when reference is made to gate operating means that the said term comprehends doors or closures for purposes in which this invention can be employed.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Specification of Letters Patent.

In these drawings 10 denotes the gate post to which the gate 11 is hinged. The gate has a latch bolt 12 slidable into a recess 13 of the post 14 whereby the gate is held closed. The bolt is under the influence of a spring 15 which exerts a pull, causing the said bolt to enter the recess. The bolt has a flexible member 16 connected to its end which is intended to pull the bolt against the action of the spring to cause its release from the post and to permit the gate to swing open. The gate has a transversely extending guide 17 in which the endof an operating crank 18 oscillates and the flexible connection 16 is attached to the outer end of the crank arm. It is the purpose of the inventor that in the movement of the'crank arm initially, it will pull the flexible connection and cause a withdrawal of the latch bolt previous to the time that the said arm contacts either end of the guide. In this way, as the crank arm oscillates under the influence of means, as will presently appear, the latch will be withdrawn and further movement of the arm will result in exerting pressure on the end of the guide to swing the gate to an open or closed position, and provision will be .made whereby the latch will cam into locked position when the gate is closed.
The crank arm 18 is formed as a part of the pintle 19 which projects upwardly and an end view of said extends through a horizontally disposed portion of a bracket 20 which bracket is tening 22 such as a set screw and when motion is imparted to the toothed segment, in a manner to be presently explained, the gate latch will be'operated and the gate will be moved or swung to an open or a closed position and the gate may be-opened in either direction.
A stud 23 on the bracket constitutes a pivot or bearing for a toothed segment 2 L which meshes with the toothed segment 21, it being shown that the segments are oppositely beveledto insure proper meshing of the teeth. j
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the gate posthas standards or arms 25, one of which is on each side of the post and each standardhas a collar 26 adjustably secured to it and attached by a fastening 27 such as aset screw. Each collar has trunnions or pivots 28 for the oper ating levers 29, it being understood that pairs oflevers are provided at each side of the gate, one ofwhich on eachside of the gate will open the gate and the other. will close the gate.
One of the levers on each side of the gate has its inner end provided with a link 30 connected to the segment 24:. on one side of its pivot joint or bearing and the other lever on the same side of the gate has a link 31 connected to the segment 2d on the side of the pivot opposite that to which the link 30 is connected. From what has been said it willbe understood that if the lever having the link 31 is operated, the segment will be pulled upwardly at that end and the gate would be opened toward the operator, whereas if the lever having the link 30 were operated, the gate would be opened in the opposite direction. The levers on the opposite side of the gate have links32 and connected to the toothed segment 24 on opposite sides of its bearing and the motion imparted to these levers when operated will be apparent. hen, therefore, a iever is actuatedto operate the gate or swing it in one direction and a traveler has passed through thegate, he may operate a lever at the opposite side to close the gate and vice versa. r
The device, as heretofore described, may obviously be usedin connection with flexible devices or cables operated from a distance from the gate org-ates so that the-gates may be operated simultaneously and in the same way. 1 7

of cables in connection with the gearing, it is shown in F 1g. 9 that levers A-A are mounted at one side of a pair of gates and levers B-B are mounted on the opposite side of a pair of gates. In the modification the gates 34 will have toothed segments 35 similar to those heretofore described and toothedisegments 36 meshing therewith, also similar to those heretofore described, but the mountings for the levers applied to the gate posts will be omitted and instead of having the levers and links assembled on the posts, flexible members 37 will. be connected to the segments 36. The segments will be oscillated or moved in'opposite directions by the manipulation of the levers AA or BB or by manipulation of one lever A and one lever B since the levers B-B have connections leadingto each toothedsegment 36 and connected thereto atopposite sides of its pivot. This is for the purpose of causing the operation of both gates in one direction or the other according to the. lever B which is pressed down. The pair of levers AA are likewise. connected with flexible elements, the said levers being coupledto the toothed segments at opposite sides of their pivotalbearings, making itpossible to operate the gates in either direction by the actuation of either of the levers A+A 'It is believed unnecessary to describe in detail the connection of the cables or flexible elements or to indicate their joints, as the arrangement" is shown in Figs. 8 and 9 and will be understood by those skilled in the art.

1. In a gate mounting and operating device,.a post, a bracket thereon, a pintle having a crank arm extending vertically through the bracket, a toothed segment on the said pintle above the bracket, an arm projecting from the pintle, a gate having a transversely disposed guide inwhich the arm.
is oscillatable and which contacts the said guide, a latch slidably'mounted on the gate, means of communication betweenthe latch and the arm, a toothed segment oscillatably mounted on the bracket having its teeth engaging the first mentioned toothed segment, standards connected to the post, collars adjustably secured on the standards, levers pivotally mounted on each of said collars, links connecting the levers on one arm to the second'mentioned toothed segment at opposite sides of its pivot, levers on the opposite collar, and links connecting the said levers to the second mentioned toothed segment on opposite sides of its pivot.

tending from the pintle, means for connecting the gate to the pintle, means for engaglng the arm to impart motion to the gate a toothed segment mounted on the stud hearing carried by the bracket and engaging the first mentioned toothed segment, arms extending upwardly from the post, collars having trunnions adjustably connected to the arms, levers mounted on the trunnions of each collar, and means for connecting the 10 levers of each collar to the second mentioned toothed segment on opposite sides of the pivot thereof.
