TUNER POCKET annex-anemones.
To all whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, (has KARL Lmsoo'r'r, a citizen of the United-States, and resident of Tekoa, county of \Vhitman, State of WVashington, have invented a new and useful Pocket Check-Protector, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates in general to devices for preventing fraudulent alteration in negotiable paper such as bank checks, drafts, and the like, and has reference more particularly to a small and compact device of this character which may be conveniently carried upon the person so that it may be handy for use at all times.
A further feature of the invention resides in the simplicity of construction which will enable the device to be made and sold at an exceedingly modest cost without sacrificing the efficiency of the same.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device made in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device as folded, Fig. 3 is a detail cross section illustrating the use of the device, Fig. 4: is a detail view in longitudinal section showing the cooperative positionv of the printing characters with.
the inking pad, and Fig. 5 1s a detail view of a portion of a check after it has been protected by the device.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1) and (2) represent a pai'r of plates hinged at one end as at (3), the plate (1) representing the top and the plate (2) representing the bottom. Arranged on the inside face of the plate (1) are a series of printing characters (4) which stand out in relief and act in the capacity of type. .These characters are arranged in series to indicate a maximum amount so that any one of the series may be utilized for printing on a check or other negotiable paper the maximum amount for which the check is made out for.
The bottom plate (2) is made with channel side edges (5) and (6) with an open front end (7) and a ledge (8) at the back end. Arranged transversely of the plate (2), with its ends confined in the channels (5) and (6), is an inking pad (9), the bottom side of which carries a pointer 10) which protrudes through an elongated opening (11) in the plate and with indicating characters Specification'of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 27, 1921.
Patented Nov. 239, 1921.
Serial No. 480,646.
(12) along the outside margin of the plate adapted to cooperate with the pointer (10) to indicate a selective positioning of the inking pad (9) relative to the printing characters (4) so that any one of the series of printing characters (4:) may be utilized to print the check when the same is presented between the plates and the plate (1) has been folded over the plate To hold a sliding adjustment of the inking pad on the plate (2), a multiplicity of small studs (13) are arranged longitudinally of the slot (11) and with which the under side of the inking pad frictionally engages. A like multiplicity of these studs (14) are also arranged on the outside of the plate (2) to co-act with the pointer (10) as an extra precaution to prevent the inking pad (9) from slipping out of alinement with the selected one of the series of printing characters (4).
The side edges of the plate (1) are arranged with downwardly presented flanges (15) which leaves the front end (16) open the same as the front end (7) of the plate (2). Thus when the plates are folded the.
front end of the device is open so that the end of the check may extend from the device as best shown in Fig. 2.
In using the protector the plates (1) and (2) may be opened and after the inking pad (9) has been moved to its proper position in alinement with that one of the series of printing characters which are to be used, the check may be presented in the plates so that pressure exerted preferably around that area of the plates adjacent the position of the inking pad will act to print that one of the series of printing characters selected. The printing will occur on the check preferably along one edge, as best shown in Figure 5, in which the check is represented by the numeral (l7).
It is of course understood that the printing characters (4) may be of any desired structure, such, for instance, as a customa perforating type, if desired. It is to be also understood that various changes ,may be made in the detail construction of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention as recited in the subjoined claims.
I claim: p
