`latter are roughened or milled in order to provide a gripping surface for retaining the paper in position to be operated upon. Fig. 2 shows in perspective the registering machine with its cover A in position thereon. There is shown a double sheet T containing a sheet T of carbon` paper placed in the machine across the openings F, F eX- actly above the printed documents and the carbons contained in the machine for receivn ing the same inscription as that made on the double sheet. When the button O has been pushed to the top of the slot P and the guide bars have been operated-it will be seen that one projection L lowers the clamp M, thus causing pressure on the double sheet and holding it fixed on the plate X. The other projection, not shown in the figure, causes the same pressure and the double sheet can not be moved during writing.
It should be noted that the sheet T is engaged a considerable distance within 'the opening F and only a small distance in F. In this position only the doit column of the double sheet is visible, thus indicating that a debit is to be written. If, on the contrary, the sheet is engaged to a considerable distance within the opening F and only a small distance within F, the avoir column will be uncovered, so that the machine is then ready to receive a credit inscription.
The edges U, U (Figs. 3 and 4) of the lateral openings F, F facilitate sliding of the independent sheets on the machine, while the edges U and U" of the clamps offer the minimum resistance to sliding. The cover is provided with marks V, V corresponding to the first line of the sheet and to thefirst line of each of the copies placed on the writing table X and between the carbons by rotating the handle D.
When the sheet is double and contains a sheet of carbon paper the inscription is of course, made on the second4 sheet. Moreover, for each individual inscription made the same inscription is obtained on the various documents, debits, delivery notes, credit notes, receipts, les, 'pages of ledgers, etc., placed under the double sheet on the writing table of the machine and between the fixed sheets `of carbon paper.

A writing machine comprising a casing, a cover therefor having a main aperture communicating with a pair of laterally extending recesses, means for supporting recording paper beneath the aperture in the cover, and means for clamping supplementary sheets of paper in exposed position in said main aperture and with their edges projecting into said recesses.
3. A writing machine comprising a frame, an apertured cover therefor, means for supporting recording paper beneath the aperture in the cover, clamping devices for securing sheets of paper during writing, and a pair of sliding bars within the casing and operable exterior-ly thereof for actuation of the clamps.
'4. A writing machine comprising a casing, an apertured cover therefor, means for supporting recording paper beneath the aperture in the cover, clamps for securing the sheets of paper during writing, an actuating bar for each of said clamps within the casing, said bars being interconnected by a lever pivotedto the cover.
5. A machine as claimed in claim 4, and including a button extending through the cover and engaging Aone of said bars tor operating the same.

A writing machine comprising a casing, an apertured cover therefor, means for supporting recording paper beneath the aperture in said cover, said aperture being so formed as to permit insertion into the machine of sheets of paper of greater width than the main portion of the aperture, means for clamping such sheets at opposite sides of said aperture, an actuating bar for each of the clamping means, and a slotted lever pivotally connected to both of said bars for actuating the same in unison.
7. A writing machine comprising a casing, an apertured cover therefor, the aperture of the cover being extended by two supplementary recesses at one end thereof to allow in-` sertion of sheets of paper, means for supporting recording paper beneath said aperture, clamps for securing the inserted sheets, and slide bars for actuating said clamps, the bars being interconnected by a lever pivoted to the cover and one of said bars carrying a pin extending through said cover for oper tion of the clamps.
