e it known that I, HENRI Rimlvowrrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Means for Locking Window-Sashes in Position, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window sashes sliding between suitable weather strips, which are secured to the jambs of the window frame, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described.
The objects of my improvement are:
First. To enable the window sashes to be locked in any desired position to prevent accidents to children.
Second. To enable the "indow sashes to be locked securely to prevent burglars from getting access to the interior of the house.
Third. To secure proper ventilation of the house while at the same time achieving also the two above stated objects; and
Fourth. To have my locking means Sir ple, durable and inexpensive.
I attain these objects by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my device on the line Sl-B of Fig. 2, showing the sliding members i8, 18 with the locking pins 19 and guide rods 20 in plan view, and showing the sashes as locked in position.
Fig. 2 is a rear the left in Fig. 1, and the screws 17.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line CD of Fig. 1, showing said members 18 with pins 19 and rods 20 in elevation.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
10 designates the window pane shown in Fig. 3; 11 designates the inner sash, and 11 the outer sash; 12, 12 and 12 are weather strips acting as guides for said sashes 11 and 11'.
Each of said sashes 11 and 11- has a metal strip 25 secured thereto, and a nunr ber of openings 19 are formed in each of said sashes and through said strips 13 is the jamb of the window frame, to which said sashes 11 and 11 are locked, as is elevation looking toward and omitting the amb l3 Specification of Letters Patent.

hereinafter described. Said jamb 13 has secured thereto a two piece bracket 14l4 by means of the screws 17 which are shown in Fig. l as connecting the flanges 16 of said bracket 14-l4 to said jamb 13.
Said bracket ll-lst has a slot 15 and suitable overlapping edges at the middle thereof, which edges may be detachably con nected to each other in any suitable manner, and the outer of said edges is shown as having the flanges 22 at its upper and lower ends; the bolt 23 passes through openings in said flanges 22, and it carries the spring 21, the curved ends of which press against the rear of the sliding members 18, 18, which are shown as having the locking pins 19 and guide rods 20 formed in one therewith.
Said locking pins 19 pass through suitable pasages in the jamb l3 and metal plates 24, which may be secured thereto in any suitable manner. Said guide rods 20 are shown as passing through sockets in said bracket 14-14 The openings 19 in the sashes 11 and 11 may be brought into registration with said pins 19, when said pins are forced into said openings by the pressure of said spring 21 on the sliding member 18 when not opposed by the crank 26.
Fig. 1 shows the sashes as locked in position and the crank 26 in a vertical plane; Fig. 2 shows the sash as unlocked and the crank 26 in a horizontal position.
The-front surface of each of the sliding members 18 has such an outline, that said crank 26 may pass beyond the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3 while turning in a clockwise direction; but it cannot pass very far beyond the horizontal position, being checked by the lower part of said member 18, thereby securing the member 18 against the action of the spring 21 when the sashes are unlocked.
By turning the crank 26 in a counter clockwise direction, said members 18 are brought into a position at which said spring 21 causes them to slide to the left in Fig. 3, thereby locking the sashes 11 and 11.
Said crank 26 is provided at its inner end with the tenon 27 adapted to fit a suitable mortise key or wrench for turning said crank.
The crank 26 is made of one piece and is shown in Fig. 2 in the same position as in Fig. 3; the brac et 1414 is made in two parts to permit the passing of said crank through the openings provided in the ends oi? said bracket.
Many changes could be made in the de sign of my means for locking window sashes in position without departing from the main scope of my invention; I do not, therefore, restrict myself to the details as shown in the drawings; but I wish to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably obvious modifications ofthesame Within the scope of my invention.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a means for locking window sashes in position the combination of a window sash having one or more openings therein, the jamb of a window frame having a passage formed therein, a two-piece bracket secured to said jamb and forming an inclosure at the rear thereof, a sliding member in said inclosure, said member having a looking pin adapted to extend through said passage and to engage said openings when the latter are brought into registration with said pin, a spring connected to said bracket and adapted to keep said pin normally in engagement with said openings, and a one piece crank located in said inclosure and pivotally connected to said bracket, said crank being adapted to move said sliding member against the force of said spring, thereby disengaging said pin from said openings, and said two piece bracket being adapted to permit the placing of said one piece crank in said inclosure.
2. In a means for locking window sashes in position the combination of a window sash having one or more openings therein, the jamb of a window frame having a passage iormed therein, a bracket secured to said jamb and forming an inclosure at the rear thereof, a sliding member in said inclosure, said member having a locking pin adapted to extend through said passage and to engage aid openings when the latter are brought into registration with said pin, said bracket having rearwardly extending flanges made in one therewith and located outside of said inclosure., a spring, a means for connecting said spring to saidflanges, aid bracket having in the rear thereof a slot adapted to permit said spring to pass therethrongh and to press on said sliding member, thereby keeping said pin normally in engagement with said openings, and a means for moving aid sliding member against the force of said spring, thereby disengaging said pin from said openings.
