JOHN F. JOST, OF LEAVENVJORTH, KANSAS.
sAsH-BowER.
[0 all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. Josr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and tate of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Bowers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash fasteners and aims to provide a device for locking the sash against opening from the outside of the window and for holding itopen at any desired angle.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a device which may be secured to the inside of a window having a sash hinged either at the top, bottom or side and which in the latter case will prevent the sash from dragging on the sill, due to sagging at the lock end.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of simple and economical construction, consisting of a few number of parts, so that the danger of breakage is reduced to a minimum.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear when the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a window equipped with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 showing the window closed;
Fig. 3 is a'fragmentary section taken on the same line but showing the window partly open;
Fig. 4 is a detail perspectiveview of a j amb plate;
Fig. 5 is a similar View of the hinge plate; Fig. 6 is a like view of the keeper plate; Fig. 7 is a similar view of the jamb plate;
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view showing the spring actuated bolt in engagement with the adjusting bar.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a window of a casement type, whose sash 10 is hingedly secured at one side of the window frame 11. It is desired that it be understood however, that the invention is equally applicable to windows hinged either at the side, top or bottom.
Preferably mortised in the frame 11, is a plate 12, the said plate being provided with a plurality of apertures 13 for the passage of screws or analogous fastening device, by means of which it is secured in position.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate t d A 31,1920. Application filed April 12, 1918. Serial N 0. 228,184. 7 i
The plate 12 is also provided with a central aperture 14 and a stud or pin 15, the latter extending laterally from the face of the plate. The opening 14 is for the purpose of receiving a screw or bolt 16, by means of which a hinge plate l7 is swiveled to the plate 12. The plate 17 isprovided with an arcuate notch 18, whose radius is the center of the opening for the screw or bolt 16, the said radius being equal to the distance of the pin 15 from the aperture 14, so that the said pin will enter the slot 18 and act to limit the pivotal movement of the plate 17 in one direction. The plate 17 is provided with alined cars 19, which are formed with openings for the reception of a hinge pin 20, the ears 19 being spaced apart so as to.
receive between them one end of the adjusting bar 21, which is formed with an aper tured ear 22- which also receives the pin 20. By this means the bar 21 is secured to the window frame or joint in a manner to permit of a horizontal swinging and a verti= cally pivotal movement.
Mortised into the inner face of the frame adjacent the free edge of the sash 10, is a keeper plate 23, whichis screwed or otherwise secured to the frame and is provided with a lug or projection24 disposed at an obtuse angle with respect to the plate. This lug or projection 24 is provided with a notch 25 for the reception of the bar 21 and when the said bar is in position 'within this notch it is permitted to lie substantially flat against the sash lOtohold the latter locked from the outside. In order to open the sash it is necessary to swing the bar 21 upward on the'bolt 16, to lift the said bar from the notch 25.
Secured to the stile at the free edge of the sash 10 is a guide plate 26, which is secured to the said stile by fastening devices 27. This plate has extending fromone edge thereof a projection 28, which is disposed at an angle to the said plate similar to the projection 24 of the plate '23. The projection 28 is provided with an opening 29 for the passage of the bar 21, this opening also having a notch 30 within which the bar 21 may be seated, the latter having notches 31' and 32 for engagement in the notch 30. Secured in the extension 28 of the plate26 is a casing 33, which forms a housing fora spring actuated bolt 34, the latter bearing along the upper edge of the bar 21 and acts.
ing'to force the said bar into the notches 25 and of the plates 23 and 26 respectively. This holds the bar securely in its adjusted position and prevents rattling of the parts i of the'lock.
When it'is desired to open the windovv' of the said bar in the notch and the plates 23 and 26. The sash 10 may be'then opened by swinging the bar upwardly upon the hinge pin 20 and either: one of the notches 31 and 32brought into engagement With the notclrBO of the plate 26. It is ofv course obvious that additional notches may be provided in the bar 21. Y
The invention is susceptible of various changes in itsform, proportion and minor details of construction and the right is reserved to make such changes. Y
Having described the invention, What is claimed is 1. The combination with a sash frame having a' sash hinged thereto, of a bar secured to the frame and capableof both :hori-.
' zont'al bearing and a vertical pivotal movesash in adjusted position.
ment, an outwardly inclined inner plate carried by the frame, an outwardly inclined inner plate carried by the sash for contacting engagement With the first mentioned plate, both of said plates being provided With notches for engagement with the bar and means for securing the bar against movement and contacting plates carriedby both said frame'and sash and engageable with said barfor holding the sash in ad justed position.
movement and contacting plates carried by both said frame and sash and engageable With the, notches of sald bar for holding the In testimony vhereof I affix my signature.
