The latches commonly in use for casement windows, and French doors, consist of two oppositely moving bolts which are secured on the face of the side stiles of the door, or casement sash and held thereon by means of cleats, and unless these bolts and the other fittings are made of brass or bronze they are very unsightly.
One of the objects of my invention is to secure these bolts to the door or casement sash in a groove made in the edge of the side stile whereby the bolts are concealed from view and I, therefore, may make them of cheaper metal than brass or bronze without F sacrificing the efiiciency of the latch, the only visible part of the latch being the knob, or the other operating handle.
Another object of my invention is to provide an operating means common to both bolts whereby the bolts may be moved simultaneously into and out of locking position; with these and other objects in view my invention consists of the parts and combination of parts aswill be hereinafter more fully set forth.

It will be understood in this specification that the word door includes casement sash and doors of all kinds.
The reference numeral 8 designates a door of approved design having the side stile 9, which stile is grooved as at 10 in its outer edge. My improved latching device is inserted in this groove and the groove closed by means of the strip or insert 11. This construction of the edge of the stile, including the insert 11, produces, in effect, a laminated structure whereby the edge of the door is to a greater extent held against warping.
In the groove 10 I place the latching bolts 12 and 13, the outer ends of which project at right angles to the bolt. There is one of these arms on each bolt.
In the face of the stile 9 I form an opening 18 connecting with the slot 10 and in this opening I mount a cylinder 19 which is rigidly connected with the operating handle 20. 21 is a face plate through which the handle 20 projects, said face plate covering the opening 18.
Cylinder 19 is provided with grooves 22 and 23 formed in the rear face of the cylinder and projecting in opposite directions and opening through the side wall of the cylinder. It will be noted that the inner ends of these grooves extend beyond the longitudinal axis of the bolts 12 and 13, as best seen in Figure 3.
The parts are shown in Figure 3 in the position they assume after the bolts have been projected to locking position, the position of the parts in the unlocked position being indicated by dotted lines in this figure, as far as the slots 22 and 23 and the arms 16 are concerned.
On revolving the handle 20 the cylinder 19 is revolved thereby changing the position of the grooves 22 and 23 whereupon the studs 17, sliding in said grooves pull, through the arm 16, the bolts 12 and 13 toward each other, or away from each other. according to the direction of movement of the knob 20 so that by the simple operation of the knob 20 the bolts are simultaneously thrown into or out of latching position.
The construction just above described is designed for operation of the bolts from the inside only.
In the event that it is desired to operate the bolts from each side of the door the two cylinders 21% are used of the same construction as cylinder 19, and two knobs 25 are used, and the arm 26 is provided with two studs 27, one stud for each cylinder 24. The arm 26 is identical with the construction with the arm 16 with the exception of the additional stud.
By my invention I provide a latch of this character which is cheaper in cost of manufacture in latches of this kind heretofore used, simple and effectivein operation, and with all parts concealed with the exception of the operating knob or handle.
I am aware that certain changes may be 5 made in the details of construction herein shown and described Without departing from the scope of the appended i-iitfnif' What I claim is: In a door latch the combination with a 10 revoluble knob, of a cylinder rigidly secured to said knob, oppositely disposed slots in the rear face of the cylinder and opening through opposite side faces of the cylinder, a pair of bolts, an arm secured to the 1nner end of each of said bolts, a stud projecting 15 from the free end 01" each of said arms and slidably mounted in each of said slots, whereby when the knob and cylinder are rotated the said bolts will be moved in opposite directions.
