Description
L. J. ISENHOUR. SANITARY COVER. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 15, 1921. 1 971,169. Patented'Nov. 15,1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT creme,
LUTHER J; ISENHOUR, or INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR ro JULIUS KIM, or
PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, AND SAMUEL R. soannn, or ennENs nne, PENN- SYLVANIA.
SANITARY GOVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 1921.
Application filed March 15, 1921. Serial No. 452,407.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LUTHER J. ISENHOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sanitary covers and is designed for use in stores and other places where frequent access is to be had to the contents of the receptacle over which the cover is placed, said cover also having a transparent section whereby the contents of the receptacle may be readily viewed.
A further feature of the invention ,is the provision of means for removably attaching the cover to the receptacle.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the cover as applied to use,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof as seen on line 2-2, Fig. 1,
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary plan view of the under side of the cover showing the manner of attaching the transparent section to the frame of the cover, and
Fig. at is an enlarged elevation of the clamp employed for removably securing the cover to the receptacle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a frame which is preferably formed of metal, such as aluminum or similar materials, said frame having an opening 2 therethrough, which opening is covered by any suitable transparent material, such as a section of glass 3, the under face of the frame 1 adjacent the opening 2 being cut away to form a shoulder 4 against which the edge of the glass is placed, said glass being held against the shoulder by providing metal clips 5 which are secured to the frame 1 by screws 6 or otherwise.
The frame 1 is held in hinging position over the receptacle 7 by forming a pair of cars 8 on the frame 1 between which extends an ear 9 carried by a clamping member 10, a bolt 11 being passed transversely through said ears for hingedly securing the frame 1 to the clamp. A wing-nut 11 is threaded onto one end of the bolt 11 so that the ears 8 may be forced inwardly against the ear 9 for causing a sufficient friction to hold the frame 1 against casually descending when elevated, and if desired washers 11 may be introduced between the ears 8 and the ear 9, for obtaining a better friction. By this construction the cover may be held at any desired elevation and without danger of its dropping with suiiicient force to break the section of glass 3.
The clamping member 10 is preferably substantially U-shaped and passes over the upper edge of the receptacle 7, an arm of the clamping member being on each side of the wall of the receptacle, and in order to removably secure the clamping member to the receptacle a clamping bolt 12 is threaded through one arm of the clamping member 10, preferably the outer one, the inner end of the bolt having a substantially cupshaped clamping foot 13 for engagement with the wall of the receptacle while the outer end thereof is provided with a wing-' head 14. The inner arm of the clamping member 10 is preferablyprovided with a transversely extending rib 15 which is so shaped that it will to some extent bite into the face of the receptacle thereby securely holding the clamping member against any lateral twisting movement.
For convenience 'of raising the cover, after it has been attached to a receptacle, a lip 16 is formed on the edge of the frame 1 at a point substantially diametrically opposite the ears 8, however, it will be understood that any suitable means may be pro vided for this purpose. This improved cover is designed to be used for covering any form of receptacle and may be made in various shapes in order to conform to the outlines of different shaped receptacles. In view of the fact that the cover is removably clamped to the receptacle it may be removed when the receptacle is empty and applied to use on a similar receptacle, and owing to the manner in which the cover is constructed it so fits over the end of the receptacle as to render the same absolutely sanitary.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A cover for a receptacle comprising a frame having an opening therethrough, a pair of cars on said frame, a projecting lip on the frame diametrically opposite said ears, a transparent covering for the opening in the frame, means for locking the transparent covering over the opening, a clamping member, an ear on the clamping member adapted to cooperate With theears of the frame for hinging the frame to the clamping member, a bolt extending transversely through said ears forming a pivot for said cover, a Wing nut engaging one end of said bolt for clamping the ears together for holding the cover in various elevated positions, friction Washers introduced betweenthe pairs of ears and single ear, a rib on the clamping member for gripping parts of the receptacle for holding the clamping member in fixed position thereon, and a clamping bolt for removably locking the clamping member in position on the reoeptacle.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 9th day of March, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-one.
LUTHER J. ISENHOUR.
