CLAMP.
Application filed April 26, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEVE BULLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Luis Obispo, in the county of San Luis ()bispo and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to oil well tools and particularly to cable clamps. Said clamp is an improvement on the device set forth in my application for wire line clamp, Serial No. 410,516, filed September 15, 1920, in the U. S. Patent Office.
The invention has for an object the provision in a clamp of means for preventing excessive rotation of the jaw members of said clamp and likewise of means for causing registration of said aw members. Allother object of the invention is to provide means for preventing stripping of threaded elements used in practising the invention.
In practising the invention I provide a link member formed with enlarged knuckles at its ends, to which link member two jaw members are pivotally joined. Said jaw members are likewise provided with a suspension means in the form of a hook or lug whereby the entire device may be suspended from a supporting rigging. Said aw members are bifurcated at their free ends and between the bifurcated portions are received means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjusted position. The link member is provided with outstanding studs which are adapted to contact with the outer surfaces of said jaw members to limit the rotation and opening movement of the jaw members about their pivot points. Likewise there is carried by one of the jaw members a stud member adapted to be received within a recess in the opposite jaw member. The stud member act-s to equalize the amount of angular movement of the jaws and likewise to insure registration of slip members or liners, which are carried by the jaws, when the jaws are closed.
The invention has for further objects the provision of an improved clamp which will be superior in point of relative simplicity and inexpensiveness, taken in conjunction with utility, durability and general efiiciency and serviceability WVith the above mentioned and other 0b- Specification of Letters Patent.

Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawing wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of the invention, A designates the improved clamp in its entirety, and B represents the jaw members, and C means for opening or closing the jaw members. The jaw members B may be designated as 1 and 2, and each is provided with enlarged portions 3 and 4, and said enlarged portions are bifurcated for a portion, as shown at 5 and 6 (see Figs. 1 and 2). Received between the bifurcated portions is a link member a which is held in the bifurcations by means of .pins 7 and 8 passing through alined perforations in the jaw members and in the link member a. It will thus be seen that the jaw members may be pivoted around said pin so as to open same. The jaw members 1 and 2 outward from the enlarged portions of the jaws are narrowed and of extended length, as shown at 9 and 10. Each of the members 9 and 10, as shown at 11 and 12 is bifurcated to form two lugs as 14 and 15 for the confinement of screw socket members I).
The jaw members are each provided with hook or lug members 0 which are preferably integrally formed with the respective jaw .membersor liners or slip 6 are adapted to be received. The jawsar-e likewise recessed as at 18 and 19 to receive a shouldered portion20 of each of the slips 6. A screw member 21 is adapted to pass through a perforajtion in each of the jaw members and have screw-threaded engagement with a threaded perforation extending through the shouldered portionflO of the slips, as shown at 22,,

It is also to bel notedthat each respective jaw member is formed with depending extensions 23 and Qtso as to entirely inclose the respective slips or liners.

This is accomplished by providing on the knuckle portlons of said link outstanding projections 27 and 28, which projections, as
shown in Fig. 3, will contact with the surface at 29 and30 of the respective jaw members and limit the opening movement, as is .obvious.
The means 1C is disposed transversely of the free ends of the jaws and operable to relatively adjust the same and to hold the same in such adjusted position. Said means includes a handle 'member 31 carrying a screw member 32 at right angles thereto.

The opposite jaw member 9 is not provided with bearings or sockets,
but on the contrary is formed with concave recesses as shown at 39 and 40. A further screw socket b has its trunnions 35 and 36 adapted to be received within the concave recesses 39 and 40. The screw socket members b are adapted to be threaded upon the threadedportions 33 and 34 of the operating handle C, so that upon turning the handle member 31 the socket members would move in opposite directions either away from each other or toward each other. Obviously to release the jaw. members a' proper turning of the operating handle 31 will'caus'e the screw socket member 6 which has itstrunnion ends received within the concave recesses, to be freed from said recesses, at which time the handlemember in its entirety may be revolved about the trunnions of the screw socket member carried by the j aw member 10. i In order to prevent the stripping of the-threads of the means C and likewise to insure that the screw socket members will always be properly received within the bifurcated portions of each of the jaw members, the screw socket members are each pro vided on a facethereoif with an outstanding lug or ear 41. Themember which is journaled to the lugs 14 and 15 has itslug 41 provided with a screw threaded perforation 4C2, while the other member 6 adapted to contact and. operate with the jaw member 9, does not have it lug member 41 screwthreaded, but is simply provided with an enlarged perforation 43. A rod member 4A screw-threaded at one end thereof is adapt ed to pass through the perforation 13 of the socket member 6 and engage the screwthreaded perforation 42 of the member Z) carried by the jawlO, It will thus be seen that I have provided several novel features in my improved clamp wherein I have provided a link member to which two jaw mem' bers are pivotally connected. Said link member carries means for preventing excessive rotation of the jaw members about their pivots and the said jaw members are provided with means for equalizing the amount of angular movement of the same about their pivots so as to insure aregistering of the slips when the jaws are closed. I have like- .wise provided novel means for preventing stripping of the threads of the "operating handle 7 It is obvious that many changes and variations and modifications may be made in departure from the particular description and showing of the accompanying drawing, in adapting the invention to varying conditions and requirements of use and service, without departing from the true spirit of the invention.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; means to insure registration of the slips when the jaws are closed, and means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjstment; said first named means comprising a stud carried by one of the jaw members, there being a recess in the other jaw member for confining and directing movement of said stud; said stud being adjacent the slip members thereby directing the cable between the slips; said link being provided with means adapted to limit rotation of the jaws about their pivots.
2. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjustment; said link member being provided with studs adapted to contact with the jaws to limit rotation of the jaws about their pivots.
3. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; a stud carried by one of the jaw members, the other jaw member being formed with a recess therein adapted to confine and direct movement of said stud, said members provided on the link member adapted to contact with the jaws to limit rotation of the aws about their pivots and to prevent the stud member carried by the jaw member from being entirely withdrawn from the recess in the other jaw member; and means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjustment.
4. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; and means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjustment; said jaw members being bifurcated at their free ends. and the said means for relatively adjusting the jaw members including screw socket members received between said bifurcated ends; one of said screw socket members being swivelly mounted in the bifurcated portion of one of the jaws, the other jaw member being formed with a grooved extremity, with the screw socket member in said jaw provided withmeans for engaging said grooved extremity; there being an oppositely pitched screw in engagement with said screw socket members whereby the jaws may be opened or closed; said screw socket members each being provided with a perforated car, there being a guide rod passing through said perforated ears for maintaining the screw socket members in alinement.
5. A cable clamp, including a. link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; studs carried by the link members adapted to contact with the jaws to limit the opening of said jaws, and means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjustment; said means including a screw socket member carried by one of the jaw members, and a screw socket member dctachably carried by the other jaw member, there being an oppositely pitched screw for engagement with the screw socket members for opening and closing the same; each of said screw socket members being provided with a perforated ear, there being a guide rod passing through said perforated ears for maintaining the screw socket members in alinement.
6. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; slips carried by the jaw members and adapted to grip the cable between them; screw socket members provided with trunnion ends, an oppositely pitched screw in engagement with said screw socket members, one of said screw socket members being mounted in one of said jaws, and the other screw socket member being adapted to detachably engage a grooved extremity in the opposite jaw member; eachof said screw socket members being provided with a perforated ear, and a guide rod passing through said perforated ears for maintaining the screw socket members in alinement and for preventing stripping of the threads of the screw socket members and the oppositely pitched screw.
7. A cable clamp, including a link; jaw members pivoted to said link; and means for relatively adjusting the jaw members and for maintaining the same in such adjustment; said link being provided with means adapted to limit rotation of the jaws about their pivots.
